👻 SPOOKY SCARY MYTH #7👻

"He's just being naughty!"

Bucking, refusing to pick up a lead, resisting transitions, or suddenly becoming difficult under saddle can be frustrating for any horse owner. But what if it's not an attitude problem?

Pain and discomfort can sometimes show up as behavioral changes, especially when something isn't quite right physically.

If your horse suddenly starts behaving differently or their performance changes, it's worth looking beyond the behavior and considering whether an underlying physical issue could be contributing.

Remember, horses can't tell us when something hurts, but they can certainly show us!

🕸️ Before you blame the attitude, investigate the horse!

We love seeing our patients try new things, take on new challenges, and continue to thrive. We can't wait to see what Chief accomplishes this year! Way to go, Chief! 👏

👻 SPOOKY SCARY MYTH #5 👻

"Joint injections are only for old horses."

Think again! 🐴

While joint issues are certainly something we see in older horses, joint pain and inflammation aren't exclusive to senior citizens.

Performance demands, repetitive stress, previous injuries, and individual joint conditions can all play a role in joint health.

Whether your horse is a young athlete, a seasoned competitor, or enjoying retirement, their joints deserve attention.

Age is just one piece of the puzzle. The more important question is what's happening with that individual horse and what they need to stay comfortable.

🕸️ Joint health doesn't have an age requirement!

👻 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐘 𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐘 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇 #𝟒 👻

“Joint injections just mask the pain.”

This is one we hear quite often! 💉

Joint injections can be an important part of managing certain joint conditions in horses. Depending on the horse, the joint involved, and the underlying condition, they may help reduce inflammation and improve comfort.

But here's the important part: joint injections aren't a magic fix, and they aren't meant to replace understanding WHY the joint is painful in the first place.

A good treatment plan looks at the whole horse, considers their individual needs and workload, and determines what steps will best support their long-term comfort and performance.

👻 SPOOKY SCARY MYTH #3 👻

“It only happens sometimes, so it probably isn't a big deal.”

Lameness doesn't always show up every time you ride, every direction, or every day.

You may notice it more:
🐴 At certain gaits
🐴 On one lead
🐴 In one direction
🐴 On a particular surface
🐴 After exercise
🐴 Or only occasionally

That doesn't mean it's not worth investigating.

Sometimes the hardest lameness to figure out is the one that seems to disappear just when you're trying to show someone. 👻

If you've noticed a change that comes and goes, pay attention to the pattern. Those details can be important when evaluating what's going on with your horse.

🕸️ Just because the lameness disappears doesn't mean the problem has.

👻 SPOOKY SCARY MYTH #2 👻

“If I can barely see it, it probably isn't a big deal.”

Sometimes the scariest lameness is the one that's easiest to miss. 👀🐴

Lameness doesn't always look like a dramatic three-legged limp. It may appear as a subtle change in stride, difficulty picking up a lead, reluctance to move forward, changes during transitions, or simply a horse who doesn't feel like themselves under saddle.

These changes can be easy to overlook, but they may be your horse's way of telling you something isn't quite right.

🕸️ Not every problem announces itself with a dramatic three-legged lameness.

👻 SPOOKY SCARY MYTH #1 👻

“He’s lame, but let’s just give him a few days off.”

Rest can be an important part of recovery, but it isn't always the best first step for every lameness.

Lameness is your horse's way of telling you something isn't right. The cause could be a minor soft-tissue issue, or it could require a more specific evaluation and treatment plan.

Understanding why your horse is lame helps us determine the right next steps and create a plan to get them back to doing what they love.

🐴 When in doubt, have the lameness evaluated before assuming time off will fix it.
