I heard you... I just didn't process it."

Children with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD* usually have normal hearing, but their brains have difficulty making sense of what they hear. This can make everyday listening and learning more challenging.

Signs of APD may include:
🔹 Frequently asking, "What?"
🔹 Difficulty following multi-step directions
🔹 Trouble understanding speech in noisy environments
🔹 Misunderstanding what was said
🔹 Challenges with reading, spelling, or remembering verbal information

🗣️ Speech Therapy can help! Our Speech-Language Pathologists work on listening strategies, language skills, auditory memory, and processing techniques to help children succeed at home, in school, and in everyday conversations.

💙 If your child struggles to understand what they hear, Unified Therapy is here to help—with appointments available to get started. Call or email today to schedule a same week evaluation with our team!

Is your child keeping up with their milestones?

Every child develops at their own pace, but coordination skills are the building blocks for confident movement, play, and learning.

Here are a few gross motor milestones to watch for:

👶 Birth–12 months: Rolling, sitting independently, crawling, pulling to stand, and taking first steps

🚶 1–2 years: Walking confidently, climbing onto furniture, beginning to run, kicking a ball

🤸 2–3 years: Jumping with two feet, walking up and down stairs, throwing a ball, standing briefly on one foot

⚽ 3–4 years: Hopping, pedaling a tricycle, catching a large ball, balancing on one foot for several seconds, climbing and running with confidence

If your child seems to trip often, avoid playground activities, struggle with balance, or isn't meeting expected movement milestones, Physical Therapy can help improve strength, coordination, balance, and confidence.

💙 Not sure if your child is on track? Unified Therapy offers FREE developmental screens to help determine if your child could benefit from therapy. Our therapists will answer your questions and guide you to the right next steps—at no cost to your family!

Letter Recognition: A Small Skill with a Big Impact!

Recognizing letters is an important building block in both Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy because it supports early reading, writing, and communication skills.

Quick Tips to Build Letter Recognition at Home:
📝 Point out letters in books, signs, and food boxes.
🎵 Sing the alphabet while pointing to each letter.
✋ Form letters with play dough, sand, shaving cream, or finger paint.
🔍 Play "Letter Hunt" around the house or during errands.
📚 Read together every day and encourage your child to find specific letters.
🎲 Match uppercase and lowercase letters with games or flashcards.

Why it matters:
Development of visual perception, fine motor, and handwriting skills needed to recognize and form letters.

Development of language skills needed to connect letters with their sounds, build phonological awareness, and develop strong early reading skills.

When Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy work together, children gain the foundational skills needed for confident reading and writing!

🎾 Elbow Pain That Won't Go Away? Therapy Can Help!

Pain on the outside or inside of your elbow can make everyday activities like opening jars, lifting groceries, typing, golfing, or even holding a coffee mug uncomfortable.

At Unified Therapy, our Occupational Therapists treat these symptoms!

Quick Tips to Reduce Elbow Pain:

✅ Avoid prolonged bending of your elbow, especially while sleeping or talking on the phone.
✅ Keep your wrist in a neutral position during work, lifting, and computer use.
✅ Take frequent stretch breaks every 30–60 minutes.
✅ Reduce repetitive gripping and use two hands when lifting heavier objects.
✅ Apply ice for 10–15 minutes after activities that increase pain.
✅ Don't push through pain—early treatment can help prevent symptoms from becoming chronic.

✨ Don't let elbow pain keep you from doing what you love.

📞 Contact Unified Therapy today to schedule an Occupational Therapy evaluation and get back to living with less pain and better function!

🚽 Potty Tip: Don't Push…Breathe! 💨

Did you know that how your child breathes on the toilet can make a big difference?

When kids strain or hold their breath, the muscles they need to relax for a bowel movement actually tighten. Instead, we teach children fun ways to manage pressure and help their bodies work naturally!

✨ Try these ideas during potty time:
🫧 Blow bubbles
🌬️ Spin a pinwheel with SLOW breaths
🎂 Pretend to blow out birthday candles
🐉 Dragon breaths
🐍 Snake hisses
🐝 Bumblebee hums
⚽ Blow a cotton ball across the counter, even use a straw!

These playful activities encourage slow, controlled exhaling, helping the pelvic floor muscles relax while making potty time less stressful.

💙 At Unified Therapy, our Occupational and Physical Therapists work together to help children with:
✔️ Constipation
✔️ Stool withholding
✔️ Toilet refusal
✔️ Pelvic floor coordination
✔️ Body awareness and positioning
✔️ Sensory challenges related to toileting

Potty training isn't just about behavior—sometimes kids need help learning how their bodies work

📞 If toileting has become a daily struggle, we're here to help your child build confidence and healthy bathroom habits through fun, individualized therapy.
