Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory

Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory Family-owned since 1999, Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory was founded by Patrick A. Leonard, a licensed funeral director serving Dubuque since 1986.

Proud to be the Dubuque Tri-State area's longest-serving crematory. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory was founded on a vision that Patrick A. Leonard carried for many years while serving families at funeral homes throughout the tri-state area. After decades of experience as a licensed funeral director in Dubuque since 1986, he pursued his dream of creating a facility of his own. In the spring of 19

99, that vision began to take shape when Patrick discovered a property on Rockdale Road, once the homestead of the historic Waller Family Farm. With the help of dedicated contractors, along with the support of family and friends, the transformation of the original home—through both remodeling and new construction—was set in motion. During construction, a remarkable piece of history was uncovered: a hand-carved wooden board above a third-floor east-facing window. The carving featured a sunburst design on an oval plaque. On the back, it was signed and dated, “James Waller, 1847.” Recognizing its significance, this unique discovery became the inspiration for our funeral home’s logo. Today, custom stone carvings reflecting that same sunburst design are placed above each window of the building, honoring the property’s rich heritage. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory officially opened in October of 1999, welcoming families from across the tri-state area. From the beginning, the facility was designed with comfort and accessibility in mind. No stairs with everything located on one level, ensuring full handicap accessibility. The space includes a welcoming entryway, spacious viewing rooms, a family gathering area, and ample parking - all thoughtfully arranged to provide a positive and comforting experience. As part of the original vision, construction also included plans for Dubuque’s first crematory. That project was completed in 2000, allowing us to begin serving the cremation needs of Dubuque and the surrounding area. Over the years, the facility has continued to evolve with thoughtful updates and additions, always with the goal of better serving the families who place their trust in us.
