In a world that tells us we can do it all, and a place where we are constantly consumed by people’s highlight reels. I am here to remind you that none of us are doing it all.

We are dropping balls.
Late on emails.
Running behind because mixing motherhood and work means sometimes someone cries when you walk out the door.
Sometimes we are telling our kids “just a moment” (for a lot of moments) while we try and show up in the digital space.
And sometimes we are ignoring the pings of our phone when we are trying to put our feet on the grass or walk in the woods.

Balance is a unicorn that most of us have yet to find.

So it’s pretty important to me to just show up authentically and unapologetically(ok actually there will be apologizing bc that’s a trait of a perfectionist😬).

What I have learned in friendship, motherhood and working especially with mothers and new parents is that there is so much value in the authenticity and vulnerability.

I originally wanted to make this post about what it’a like being on call, but that just seemed to skim the surface.

So when you see someone showing up with meals, just know her kitchen is probably messy and her kids are eating pizza. When a mom is late it’s probably because she had to kiss a boo boo or nurse a baby. When someone takes a moment to get back to you, maybe it’s because they needed some time to unplug.

So here’s my heartfelt reminder, none of us are doing it all, myself especially. But I appreciate you sticking around this corner of the internet and I appreciate even more those of you who let me be a part of your village.

Hold my hand while I tell you something…you don’t have to simply accept care, you can actively choose a provider whose philosophy aligns with their values.

You deserve to ask questions.

You deserve to understand your options.

And you deserve a care team that welcomes those conversations.

The people supporting you, the conversations you’re having, and the questions you’re asking can have a profound impact on how informed and supported you feel.

If you’re currently interviewing providers, c0mment QUESTIONS and I’ll send you my favorite provider interview questions. 🤍 (be patient, I am a real human(and mama) sending these things!

Raise your hand if your provider has mentioned anything about environment + birth physiology??
🦗 🦗🦗
…yep, that’s kinda what I thought.

When most people think about birth preparation, they think about what they’ll do during labor.

But one of the most important questions might be:

What kind of environment am I creating?

The environment around you influences the hormones inside you.

And those hormones play a huge role in how labor unfolds.

This is one of those birth conversations I wish we were having more often. 🤍

I spend a lot of time in client visits talking about the importance of hormones!

Ok maybe you are sensing a pattern lately. But I want you to know just how important it is to take the time choosing the right provider. Interviewing and asking questions.

Do you feel heard?

Do you feel rushed?

Do they welcome questions?

Do they explain options?

Do they make space for your preferences?

The goal isn’t finding the “perfect” provider.

It’s finding someone whose approach aligns with your values and helps you feel informed, respected, and supported.

Also remember there are a variety of different providers who will support different needs and birth philosophies like home birth midwives, hospital based midwives and ob/gyns. It can be important to know the difference.

One thing I’ve noticed after supporting births:

The “best” provider for you, may not be the same one your best friend or sister in law chose. Or even the one with the most reviews.

It’s the one who makes you feel heard, informed, and supported.

When you’re interviewing a provider, don’t just pay attention to their answers.

Pay attention to how they make you feel.

Do your questions feel welcomed?

Do you feel rushed? (Suuuuuper important)

Do they make space for your preferences?

Do you leave feeling more informed than when you arrived?

Those things matter.

A lot.

If you’re currently choosing a provider, I’ve put together my favorite 20 provider interview questions to help you navigate those conversations.

Today at a birth, I was reminded of something I wish more women knew:

Your provider matters more than your fancy stroller, car seat or cute baby things.

The family I was supporting had a provider who knew their birth preferences, respected their decisions, answered their questions, and encouraged them to birth in the way that felt best for them.

And the difference was palpable.

Not because birth went perfectly.

Not because everything went according to plan.

But because they felt supported.

Heard.

Trusted.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: two providers can work in the same hospital and offer completely different birth experiences.

So yes, research the stroller.

But spend some time researching the person who will be helping guide one of the biggest days of your life, too. 🤍
