Breast reconstruction is not one-size-fits-all. Options can include implant-based reconstruction using silicone or saline implants, as well as flap reconstruction using your own tissue, including TRAM, DIEP, and latissimus dorsi techniques.

Dr. Schroeder completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at The Ohio State University, where he trained at the James Comprehensive Cancer Center on complex reconstruction after breast cancer surgery.

Is breast reconstruction covered by insurance? Under most health plans, breast reconstruction after a covered mastectomy is protected by federal law through the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act.

Coverage can include rebuilding the affected breast, surgery on the opposite breast for symmetry, external prostheses, treatment for physical complications such as lymphedema, and follow-up or revision procedures. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other plan requirements may still apply.

Coverage after a lumpectomy can depend on medical necessity and your specific insurance plan. Medicare and Minnesota Medical Assistance may also provide reconstruction coverage under applicable requirements.
