Meet Ken!

Ken Kurisu is from Sapporo, Japan. He obtained his MD and PhD from the University of Tokyo, where he conducted both clinical work and research in eating disorders, obesity, and psycho-oncology. His doctoral dissertation focused on behavioral intervention using a smartphone application equipped with machine learning–based optimization. He is currently a research scholar on our Duluth campus, studying the psychological and physiological stress responses among smokers. His research interests broadly cover the biopsychosocial model of medicine. He has long enjoyed mathematics and is interested in applying statistical and machine learning methods in his research. He enjoys spending weekends surrounded by the natural beauty of Duluth with his toddler.

This summer we had the privilege of having Chadha (pictured on the left) join our lab!

Chadha is from Mahdia, Tunisia. She will be graduating in the fall from Earlham College with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She is interested in the stress response and implications on physical and mental health. Chadha is also interested in Neuroscience, more specifically, she did a research project on the brain’s glymphatic system and how its dysfunction is linked to Alzheimer’s. Aside from her academic activities, Chadha enjoys playing piano and baking.

“I enjoy learning (about pretty much anything); and I enjoy helping others learn, too! My undergraduate and graduate coursework, research, and teaching focused predominantly on psychology (cognition), communication (persuasion/social influence), and statistics/research methods. My research with Dr. al’Absi’s Stress & Resilience Research Labs explores stress, resilience, and substance use. In my free time, I enjoy growing fruits & veggies from seeds and various artsy/craftsy hobbies - I’ve made shoes, boots, skirts, hoodies, mittens, hats, scarves, GoreTex and mesh bug suits for my golden retriever (for year-round backpacking), dog booties, waterproof bags, and various other craftsy (carved/sewn/painted/built) ‘things’.”
