Northwoods is excited to announce another in-person clinician - Kari Nelson, MSW, LGSW. I have had the privilege of supervising Kari since her bachelor's degree in social work and am honored that she chose Northwoods to continue her amazing work. Kari is an incredibly gifted and caring practitioner. Kari already has limited openings in her schedule, so please reach out via text, phone call, or messenger to schedule. Below is an excerpt in Kari's own words.

Taking this step in caring for yourself is meaningful, and it matters. My approach to therapy is person-centered and eclectic because no two people - or their stories - are the same. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, understood, and able to show up just as you are. I often draw from mindfulness and grounding practices, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, cognitive-behavioral strategies, Polyvagal Theory, and DBT-informed skills to support deepening self-understanding, enhancing coping abilities, uncovering resilience, and fostering meaningful connection. I support individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, life transitions, and stress that can come with everyday life. I believe in each person's inherent worth and capacity for growth. However you're arriving, we can take things at your pace and figure it out together. At the heart of my philosophy is this: You are not defined by what you're going through. Your thoughts, emotions, and challenges are real, important, and part of your story - and not the entirety of who you are. A bit about me: I am a lifelong Minnesotan and longtime Duluthian. I like to spend time out in the woods, down by the lake, and with my loved ones, including my two wonderfully quirky cats. I also enjoy music, board games, crossword puzzles, and continuing my own self-growth - something I believe we're all navigating in different ways.

From the bottom of my heart-thank you all 🤍

What started as a solo adventure has grown into something truly meaningful. I’m so grateful to now have an incredible team alongside me—welcoming Kristin Rich, LPCC in July, Lindsay Smart, LPCC in October, Ashley Tuve, LICSW and Liz Flink in April, and one more amazing clinician joining us later this month.

So much growth in one year, and I couldn’t be more thankful for each of you who made it possible. Here’s to everything we’ve built—and everything ahead 🌲✨

In a world that constantly pushes us to move faster, fix things quickly, and navigate increasing social and moral divides, it can be easy to lose sight of ourselves in the process.

Taking time to prioritize your emotional well-being matters. Setting healthy boundaries with your time, energy, and relationships is not selfish. It is an act of self-respect and self-awareness.

Healthy emotional boundaries allow us to care for others without losing ourselves. They help protect our nervous system, reduce burnout, and support more authentic relationships.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, or struggling to say no, it may be your mind and body asking for more space and balance.

Healing and growth often begin with learning how to protect your peace.

Letting Go of Perfectionism: A Mental Health Perspective

Perfectionism often looks like achievement on the outside.
High standards. Strong work ethic. Reliability.

But internally?
It can feel like constant pressure, self-criticism, anxiety, and never quite feeling “enough.”

Perfectionism tells us:
• Don’t make mistakes.
• Don’t disappoint anyone.
• Don’t rest until it’s flawless.
• Don’t let anyone see you struggle.

Over time, that voice can fuel burnout, anxiety, depression, strained relationships, and emotional exhaustion.

Letting go of perfectionism doesn’t mean lowering your standards.
It means loosening the grip of shame and fear.

It means:
• Allowing yourself to be human.
• Making room for learning instead of punishing
mistakes.
• Choosing progress over paralysis.
• Recognizing that your worth is not performance-based.

From a nervous system perspective, perfectionism often keeps us stuck in fight-or-flight — always scanning for what could go wrong, what needs fixing, what isn’t good enough. When we practice self-compassion and flexible thinking, we create more access to safety, connection, and calm.

Healing perfectionism is not about becoming careless.
It’s about becoming freer.

If you find yourself exhausted from trying to “get it right” all the time, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to navigate that pressure by yourself.

**Northwoods Therapeutic Services**

Anxiety is not a weakness.
It is a nervous system that has learned to stay on high alert.

You might notice:
• Racing thoughts that won’t slow down
• Tightness in your chest or shallow breathing
• Difficulty sleeping or turning your mind “off”
• Irritability, overwhelm, or feeling constantly on edge
• Avoiding situations that once felt manageable

Anxiety often develops as a protective response. Your system is trying to anticipate danger, prevent mistakes, or keep you safe. The challenge is that over time, that protection can begin to limit your life.

At Northwoods Therapeutic Services, we approach anxiety through a trauma-informed and nervous-system lens. We integrate evidence-based approaches such as:

• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns
• EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to process root experiences
• Polyvagal-informed interventions to support regulation and safety in the body
• Acceptance and mindfulness strategies to reduce avoidance and increase flexibility

Healing from anxiety is not about “just calming down.”
It is about helping your system learn that it is safe enough to rest.

If anxiety is impacting your work, relationships, parenting, sleep, or overall functioning, support is available.

📍 Serving Cloquet, Duluth, and surrounding Minnesota communities

You do not have to manage it alone. Lindsay has only a couple openings left and has a passion for EMDR and Polyvagal!
