One of the things I love most about massage therapy is that what happens beneath our hands is much bigger than simply “loosening a tight muscle.”
When pressure is applied to the body, your nervous system receives information.
A LOT of information. ⚡
Pressure, compression, stretching, movement and sustained contact stimulate sensory receptors throughout the skin, muscles, tendons, joints and connective tissues.
Those signals travel toward the spinal cord and brain, where your nervous system begins deciding what all that information means.
Safe?
Threatening?
Can I soften?
Do I still need to protect this area?
Can I move differently now?
✅ This is one reason I don’t think great massage should be measured by how hard somebody can push. 💪
Deep pressure and painful pressure are NOT the same thing.
Sometimes slow, broad, firm pressure gives the nervous system a clearer signal than aggressive digging ever could.
And something fascinating can begin to happen.
🧠 The brain receives stronger information about where the body is in space.
🌿 The autonomic nervous system may begin shifting away from high alert and toward a calmer state.
🫁 Breathing may naturally deepen.
💪 Protective muscle guarding may decrease.
🗺️ Body awareness may become clearer.
❤️ The person may begin to feel more settled, grounded and connected to their own body.
That last one matters.
Because sometimes the muscle isn’t simply “tight.”
Sometimes the nervous system has decided that tension is useful.
Protection.
Stability.
Bracing.
A strategy that made sense somewhere along the way.
And here comes the part of massage therapy that absolutely fascinates me after more than two decades of working with bodies:
We don’t necessarily have to FORCE that tension to disappear.
We can give the nervous system different information.
Place the hands.
Wait.
Apply pressure.
Listen.
Move.
Wait again.
Feel what changes.
Then respond to what the body gives you instead of blindly following a predetermined massage routine.

Touch becomes a conversation.
This is also why you might have experienced something curious during massage.
Your therapist works on one area…and suddenly another area feels different.
Your shoulder drops.
Your jaw unclenches.
Your breathing changes.
Your hip suddenly feels easier.
Or you stand up afterward and think:
“Whoa. I feel like I’m actually IN my body again.”
That experience isn’t necessarily mystical.
There is some pretty fascinating physiology behind it. 🔬✨
Research into massage, mechanoreception, proprioception and autonomic regulation continues to explore how mechanical input from touch influences sensory processing, muscle activity, pain perception and nervous-system state.
And personally, I think this gives us a much better way to understand massage than the old idea that therapists simply hunt down knots and smash them into submission. 😂
Your body isn’t pizza dough.
And your nervous system isn’t sitting quietly in the corner while somebody works on your muscles.
It is participating in the entire experience.
Maybe one of the most powerful questions in massage isn’t:
“How deep can I go?”
Maybe it’s:
“What kind of information does this body need from my hands right now?” 🧠🙌✨
That is where massage gets REALLY interesting.
And that is what my service Sneaky Deep is all about!
