🀍 Happy World Breastfeeding Month 🀍

Breastfeeding is a journey, not a straight line. Some days it flows easily, other days it takes patience, support, and a whole lot of grace with yourself.

However your feeding journey looks: breast, bottle, pumped, combo, or something in between, you are doing an incredible job nourishing your baby.

This month, we're celebrating every parent navigating this path, and reminding you that you don't have to do it alone. Our lactation support team is here for the questions, the challenges, and the wins, big and small.

πŸ’› Need support? Reach out. We're in your corner (and we may provide insurance covered lactation support!)

Nobody gives you the full picture before you have a baby. So let us try!

Things that are harder than people tell you:

🀍 The first few weeks of breastfeeding, even when it's going "well"
🀍 How long postpartum recovery actually takes
🀍 The loneliness that can show up even when you're surrounded by people
🀍 Losing track of who you were before
🀍 How much a baby can cry and how helpless that can make you feel
🀍 The weight of being someone's everything, every single hour of every single day

Things that are better than you could have imagined:

πŸ’š The way they smell. Nobody prepares you for that.
πŸ’š The first time they grab your finger and don't let go
πŸ’š How funny babies actually are, nobody tells you that part!
πŸ’š The version of your partner you get to watch become a parent
πŸ’š The 3am quiet (yes, even that!) The whole world asleep except you and your baby.
πŸ’š The moment you realize you'd do every hard part of it again without hesitation

Parenthood is both of these lists at the exact same time. The hard doesn't cancel out the beautiful. The beautiful doesn't erase the hard.

You're allowed to hold both. πŸ’›

To the pregnant person who is afraid.

Not the kind of fear that you say out loud. The kind that lives quietly underneath the excitement, showing up at 2am when the house is quiet and you can't stop your brain from going there.

What if something goes wrong?
What if I'm not enough?
What if labor is too much?
What if I lose myself in this?
We see you.

Fear doesn't mean you're not ready. It means you understand the weight of what's coming. That's not weakness. That's love, arriving early.

You don't have to be fearless to do this. You don't have to feel ready. Nobody who has ever walked into a birth room had it all figured out beforehand.

What you need isn't certainty. It's support. And we are here for all of it. The excitement, the terror, and everything in between. ✨

So what actually happens when a postpartum doula comes to your house? Let us paint you a picture!

You open the door. You're in your third day of the same pajamas. The baby has been cluster feeding since 2am. There are dishes in the sink and you genuinely cannot remember if you ate lunch.

And then we walk in.

Here's what a postpartum doula visit actually looks like:

🀍 We take the baby. You hand them over and we've got them. They will be fed, held, soothed, and loved while you do something radical, like sleep, shower, eat a hot meal, or just sit in silence for twenty minutes.

🀍 We check in on feeding. How are feeds going? Any pain, latch issues, supply concerns? We can help troubleshoot, offer guidance, and refer you to one of our IBCLCs if you need more support.

🀍 We tidy as we go. Nothing deep, but we'll wash those bottles, fold that laundry, wipe down the kitchen. The kind of small things that feel enormous when you're running on no sleep.

🀍 We check in on you, not just the baby. How are you feeling? How's your body? How's your mental health? Are you sleeping when you sleep? We're paying attention, and we'll flag anything that concerns us.

🀍 We answer your questions. All of them. The ones you've been Googling at 3am. The ones you're too embarrassed to ask your pediatrician. The ones that start with "is it normal that…" Yes. Bring them all.

🀍 We leave you a little more okay than we found you. That's the job. That's all of it.

Postpartum doula support is the village that most of us don't have anymore showing up at your door, ready to take care of you while you take care of your baby.

Reach out to discuss the support you deserve!

Did you know you can donate your breast milk and change a baby's life? ✨

If you're producing beyond what you're using, you may be eligible to become a milk donor through the WakeMed Mothers' Milk Bank, North Carolina's only accredited nonprofit milk bank, and one of only 32 in the entire country.

Here's where your donated milk goes:

✨ Premature and critically ill babies in NICUs across North Carolina and the Southeast (approximately 44 NICUs and counting!)

✨ Hospitals as far north as Maryland and as far south as Florida and Alabama

✨ Full-term newborns who need a bridge supply while their mother's milk comes in

✨ Outpatient babies whose pediatrician has prescribed donor milk for medical need

For these babies, donor milk isn't a preference. It's medicine.

It protects fragile newborn guts and delivers life-saving antibodies.

Here's how to become a donor:

πŸ’› Apply online and complete a screening
πŸ’› Complete a donor packet and get OB & pediatrician sign-off
πŸ’› Complete a blood draw at a local LabCorp (free to you)
πŸ’› Once approved, collect and freeze your milk at home
πŸ’› Schedule your drop off appointment on our website!

The process is safe, straightforward, and completely free to donors. And the impact is profound.

Visit wakemed.org/mothersmilkbank to learn more and apply. And if you have questions about milk donation, supply, or lactation support, our IBCLCs are always here to help! ✨

New parent at 3am wondering if your baby is getting enough to eat? πŸŒ™
This one's for you.

It's one of the most common worries in the early days and one of the hardest to quiet, because newborns can't tell you they're full and the internet will send you down a rabbit hole fast.

Here are some signs to actually look for:

πŸ’› Wet and dirty diapers. This is your most reliable indicator. By day 4–5, you should be seeing at least 6 wet diapers and 3–4 dirty diapers per day. In the first few days, fewer is normal as your milk is coming in.

πŸ’› Weight gain. Most newborns lose up to 7–10% of their birth weight in the first few days. This is expected. By day 10–14, most babies are back to their birth weight and gaining steadily from there.

πŸ’› Active feeding cues. Rooting, sucking on hands, and turning their head are early hunger cues. A baby who is regularly showing hunger and feeding is a baby who is getting what they need.

πŸ’› Swallowing during feeds. Listen and watch for swallowing. You'll hear it as a soft "kah" sound during nursing, or see a steady rhythm during bottle feeding.

πŸ’› Contentment after feeds. A satisfied baby will generally come off the breast or bottle relaxed, with open hands and a softer body. They may not be happy every single time, but overall contentment after feeds is a good sign.

πŸ’› Steady alertness during wake windows. A well-fed baby will have periods of calm alertness between sleeps. If your baby seems consistently lethargic or difficult to wake for feeds, call your pediatrician.

If something feels off, trust that instinct and reach out to your provider or a lactation consultant. Early support makes a huge difference.

06/30/2026

"Do I really need a doula if my partner will be there?" πŸ’

This is the question we get asked more than any other
And we love it, because it deserves a real answer!

Short answer: yes, and here's why.

Your partner loves you. They want to support you. But in the middle of active labor, even the most devoted partner is also scared, exhausted, and emotionally overwhelmed right alongside you. They've never seen you in that much pain before. They don't know if what's happening is normal. They're trying to remember everything from that one birth class six months ago while also just wanting you to be okay.

That's where we come in.

A doula isn't there to replace your partner. We're there to support both of you. We've been in hundreds of birth rooms. We know what's normal and what's not. We know the comfort measures, the position changes, the words that actually help in the moment. And because we're calm (we've done this before), your partner gets to stay present with you emotionally instead of carrying the weight of "am I doing this right?"

We also free your partner up to just be a partner. To hold your hand, to look you in the eyes, to be fully there, instead of also trying to be your nurse, advocate, and labor coach all at once.

Think of it this way: your partner is your person. We're your team. And birth is better with both. πŸ’›

If you've been on the fence about hiring a doula because you have a great partner, we hear you, and we still think you deserve both of us in that room.

What else would you ask your doula?
