While therapy alone is not a fix for systemic trauma. It can be a place where we finally get to name it without being gaslit. In therapy, you get to say, This happened to me. This hurt me. This shaped my experience. This system failed me. This is undoubtedly part of why this work matters so much to me. In therapy, we honor truth even when the world tries to deny it. You deserve to have your reality heard without immediately being asked to defend it, minimize it, or convince someone that what happened to you was real.

Therapy cannot dismantle every system that causes harm. But it can provide a space where people can begin to understand what happened to them, put language to their experiences, reconnect with themselves, and recognize that their responses make sense within the context of what they have endured. Serene Life Counseling & Wellness will always be an affirming and compassionate space where your experiences are taken seriously, your story matters, and you do not have to convince us that your pain is real.

Sending so much love, light, and healing to those who are hurting, frustrated, disappointed, angered, outraged, and feel alone, unheard, or unsupported. I hear you. I see you. I stand beside you. đź–¤

Some of the patterns we carry were never ours to begin with.

Our new blog post explores what intergenerational trauma actually is, how it shows up in our bodies and relationships, and what it means to heal what was handed down to us.

We come from people who survived. Now, we get to be the ones who heal. đź’›

You are the evidence that healing is possible. Every boundary you set, every moment you choose peace, and every time you extend yourself grace, you’re breaking cycles that were never yours to carry. Healing takes time, but so do all great things. Keep going!

In my work as a therapist, each week I sit with so many people who are hurting. People navigating difficult seasons, grief, exhaustion, heartbreak, uncertainty, and so many other painful experiences.

One of the parts of this work that I absolutely love, and feel deeply honored by, is getting to witness people somewhere in the middle of their becoming. I get to sit beside people as they begin to realize that they are not as powerless as they may have once believed. That they have agency. That they have choices. That, in many ways, they already hold so much of what they need to begin healing within themselves. That moment of realization is powerful. To help someone discover that for themselves is a gift. To hold space for another human being in what can sometimes feel like an incredibly lonely world is a gift.

And this work has changed me, too. My own journey has included challenges, disappointments, grief, painful experiences, and moments that required me to look inward in ways I probably would not have chosen for myself. But those experiences also have deepened my understanding of myself, of relationships, of healing, and of what it means to sit with another person in their pain. They have shaped the therapist I am today.

So this is partly a reflection, and partly a moment of gratitude. If you are somewhere in the middle of something difficult right now, keep going. Not because everything will magically become perfect. Life was never meant to be perfect. But because there can be joy on the other side of difficulty. There can be clarity. There can be expansion. There can be a version of you that you have not met yet. Sometimes getting to the other side means moving through the thing rather than around it.

You only get one shot at this particular iteration of your life. So do your best to make it count. Find the joy. Do the healing. Become who you are becoming. And keep going. 🤎

Su***de prevention is knowing the warning signs AND creating space for people to feel safe enough to tell the truth about how they’re doing.

Sometimes the people we worry about are the ones still going to work, caring for others, answering texts, and saying, “I’m good.”

Beneath the functioning can be profound exhaustion, loneliness, hopelessness, or pain. For Black women, the expectation to be strong and resilient can make it difficult to admit when we need support.

This month, let’s move beyond “be strong” and make more room for “you don’t have to carry this alone.”

Check on your people. Listen. Take hopelessness seriously. And don’t be afraid to ask directly about su***de. Asking does not plant the idea. It creates an opportunity for honesty and connection.

If you’re struggling, remember: you are worthy of support before you reach a breaking point.

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or is in immediate danger, call or text 988.
