June is Aphasia Awareness Month.

Aphasia is a condition that affects how a person speaks, understands, reads, or writes, often when the brain's language centers are impacted. For brain tumor patients, it can be one of the most disorienting parts of a diagnosis.

But aphasia changes communication, not intelligence, not identity, not who that person is.

With patience, the right care team, and the right support, people with aphasia continue to thrive.

Brain metastases are significantly more common than primary brain tumors and are an increasingly important area of focus in cancer care. As treatments improve and patients live longer, the likelihood of cancer spreading to the brain has also increased.

Almost all cancers have the potential to spread to the brain or spine, with lung, breast, prostate, kidney, melanoma, ovarian, and thyroid cancers among the most common sources. This underscores the need for specialized, multidisciplinary care and continued research to better understand and treat metastatic disease.

At the Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis, our teams are advancing research and expanding treatment approaches to improve outcomes for patients facing brain metastases.
