Take a look at our new website! We've been trying to find the right words to describe what we do, and our new website finally feels like authentically us!

We care for breastfeeding families (as do all the wonderful lactation support services in the area), but we realized that simply saying, "we offer lactation consulting and bodywork" didn't fully capture our approach.

At Teaching Babies to Nurse, feeding your baby is a whole-body process. Every feeding reflects not only how a baby uses their mouth, but also how they move, regulate, organize, and interact with the world around them. So, our care integrates advanced lactation consulting with body-centered assessment and treatment in several ways:

- the Body-Led Breastfeeding approach to lactation support

- combined visits with bodywork and lactation working together in real time

- advanced body-based care for mother and baby from our osteopathic physicians

We hope our new website better reflects the philosophy that has guided our work from the beginning.

Teaching Babies to Nurse is delighted to introduce our new lactation consultant! Please join us in welcoming Tikara Cannon, MPH, IBCLC to the Teaching Babies to Nurse team 😊

Tikara brings years of experience supporting breastfeeding families through her own practice in Virginia. We feel so fortunate to have found her as she makes her way back home to North Carolina.

From our very first conversations, we were drawn to her curiosity, thoughtful clinical approach, and the way she naturally considers infant movement, regulation, and whole-body function as part of feeding assessment and care. She is a wonderful fit for our Body-Led, integrative approach to breastfeeding support.

We can't wait for our families to meet her!

You may have noticed TBTN has a new look recently... we've updated our logo! The two fiddlehead ferns felt like the perfect symbol for the work we do everyday.

Just as a fiddlehead slowly unfurls into a fern, we have the privilege of helping parents and babies gently unfold into their feeding relationship - supporting both physical ease and the connection that grows between them.

Margaret Salty is a trusted and well-known voice in the lactation field, and this week she sat down with Ellen Chetwynd, IBCLC, PhD for a rich conversation on Body-Led Breastfeeding and the Infant Suck Strength Exam (ISSE).

In this episode, Ellen shares how years of clinical practice — and noticing what wasn’t explained by diagnoses like thrush, Raynaud’s, or tongue-tie — led her to look more deeply at the infant’s body, neurology, and suck function.

Together, Margaret and Ellen explore how the ISSE moves beyond appearance-based latch assessment to better understand suck strength, tongue function at the breast, and infant compensation patterns that often drive pain and feeding challenges.
