HONORING THE MOON:
WOMEN’S YOGA & AYURVEDA RETREAT DAY

I’m excited to be a guest teacher at a day retreat next weekend in my hometown of Durham with yoga teacher extraordinaire, Olynda Smith.

🌀
Part of creating good health as a woman is learning to honor the ebbs and flows of our monthly cycles.
🌀
I will be teaching about the 4 “inner seasons” of the monthly cycle and how their unique energies and gifts can guide our activities and inspiration throughout the month - eye-opening and relevant info even for women not currently cycling.
🌀
Ayurveda gives us excellent cues for reading our body and understanding our own needs. The inner seasons give us a specific way to support our balance and healing through all phases of our cycle and even into menopause and beyond.

🧘🏼‍♀️
Our day will start with setting personal intentions, followed by a full yoga practice with Olynda. Her customary precision and inspiring guidance always opens new spaces in my body and creates a feeling of grounding, connection and expansion.

🥦🥑🍲
We’ll have a fantastic potluck lunch (oh my goodness, the last one I went to was out of this world!), and there are beautiful nature trails to explore on the forested retreat center grounds... There are always awesome women to connect with - and chocolate.
🍫
Need we say more?

I love going to the “Art in Bloom” exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art each year.

The floral artists are assigned one work from the museum’s permanent collection as their inspiration, and they create something in flowers to pair with that piece. Sometimes the connection is obvious, sometimes it’s more subtle…

A huge part of what I love about the show is the people who attend - the way people come out for the flowers! It’s a wildly popular sold out show every time, and everybody seems so innocent and earnest, dressing in our most flowerful attire. Not a cynical eye in the house. Art is such an evocative way to connect with humanity.

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE KEEPING OUT

When I’m at home in India, there’s not so much background noise.

No TV, no radio advertisements, no grocery checkout line magazine racks…. No junk text messages, no Black Friday “deals,” no robo calls.

Fewer external distractions means, eventually, fewer internal distractions. Intuition becomes more possible.

We must protect the quiet, wherever we find it. I don’t want anyone else’s bad ideas taking up space in my mind.

Know what you’re keeping out, and why.

THE GOLDEN HOUR

When we slow down, we can all feel that the sandhi, or joints, of the day such as sunrise or sunset are powerful, liminal times when we might enter a special frame of mind, a reassuring awareness of our place in the world and the immense gift of being alive right here, right now…
