Xenon gas is basically invisible to a standard MRI.

So how does the XENOVIEW® MRI Platform turn a single 10-second breath into a full 3D map of lung ventilation?

Short answer: we boost that gas's signal by 10,000-fold — through hyperpolarization — before the patient ever inhales it.

Why seeing mucus plugs matters in severe asthma 🫁

A recent review paper in Respiratory Research nicely elucidates that biologic therapy can reduce occlusive mucus plugs and improve functional outcomes, including ventilation defects measured by MRI.

Structural imaging with CT can identify the obstruction and Xenon MRI can determine the functional consequences of the mucus plug. It also can show where residual plugs remain after treatment. Xenon MRI offers noninvasive, radiation-free insight into regional lung function — supporting precise, personalized asthma care.

What makes Xenon MRI different?

Traditional imaging shows what the lungs look like. Xenon MRI shows how they actually work. 🫁

In an episode of The Healthcare Exchange, Pulmonogists Cedric "Jamie" Rutland MD FCCP and Chase Hall, MD discuss how functional imaging with Xenon MRI is changing the way physicians understand and treat lung disease.

We'll be in Denver at the AABIP Meeting in a few weeks, talking with the physicians who thread scopes and devices into lungs for a living. can assist in the regional functional map to guide the interventional procedure and visualize how it quantitatively restores the regional ventilation - all non-invasively, with no radiation exposure to child or adult.

If you are attending, let's talk. Connect with J. Fernando Corredor at AABIP, August 20–22.

550,000,000+.
More than the entire U.S. population, multiplied by one and a half.

That's how many people worldwide are living with chronic lung disease today. 🫁

🫁 COPD: 380 million worldwide
🫁 Asthma: 260 million worldwide
🫁 Lung Cancer: ~2.5 million new cases diagnosed each year
🫁 Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: 3 million worldwide, median survival 3–5 years after diagnosis
🫁 Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: ~1 in 100,000 people
🫁 Cystic Fibrosis: 100,000 worldwide
🫁 Long COVID respiratory complications: tens of millions and counting

Standard tests — spirometry, oxygen saturation, six-minute walks — are valuable. They don't show regional lung function.

The XENOVIEW® MRI Platform enables Xenon MRI: visualizing regional lung ventilation in a single breath hold, radiation-free. Available today as an FDA-approved, reimbursed exam. For ILD and PAH, we're researching the platform's potential in alveolar diffusion and micro-vascular hemodynamics — research-stage, not yet an approved use.

This is why we do this work.

Behind every bronchiectasis diagnosis is a person navigating the daily challenges of living with a chronic lung disease. Every breath matters, and timely, accurate diagnosis can help patients and their care teams make more informed decisions earlier in the care journey.

On World Bronchiectasis Day, we're reminded that continued innovation, research, and collaboration have the power to improve lives. At Polarean, we're committed to advancing functional pulmonary MRI technology that helps clinicians visualize the ventilation abnormalities that result from airway widening and damage that occurs complex respiratory diseases like bronchiectasis.

Together, we can help create a future where more patients receive the answers and care they deserve.

What if Xenon MRI could help identify, with extremely high accuracy, whether a patient is healthy, has Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), or has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?

A newly published study demonstrates how Xenon MRI moves beyond disease characterization and closer to clinical decision-making.

Using four key biomarkers derived from a Xenon MRI exam, researchers demonstrated the ability to distinguish ILD from COPD and from healthy participants with high sensitivity and specificity:

✔️ Areas of little or no airflow in the lungs (ventilation defect percentage)

✔️ Abnormal gas diffusion across the alveolar membrane (high membrane percentage)

✔️ Reduced capillary blood volume n the lower lungs (basilar red blood cell [RBC]defect)

✔️ Impaired blood oxygenation measured noninvasively (assessed through RBC xenon chemical shift)

Patients with chronic lung disease often undergo multiple tests before reaching a diagnosis, and differentiating between disease processes can be challenging. The ability to classify patients from a radiation-free functional imaging exam has the potential to support earlier diagnosis, improve diagnostic confidence, and guide patient management.

This study, with a novel decision tree algorithm, represents another important contribution from the team at Duke University Health System including, Fuyao Li, Dr. Suphachart Leewiwatwong, Dr. Hong Qin, Dr. Bryan O'Sullivan-Murphy, Dr. Aparna Swaminathan, Dr. David Mummy, and Dr. Bastiaan Driehuys, to the growing field of functional lung imaging.

Asthma affects millions of people worldwide, and advancing how we understand lung function remains critical to improving care.

As asthma management continues to evolve, clinicians are increasingly looking beyond symptoms to better understand what's happening inside the lungs. Technologies like Xenon MRI can provide detailed insights into regional lung function, helping support more informed clinical decisions and more personalized treatment approaches.

At Polarean, we're committed to advancing functional lung imaging and helping clinicians and researchers and gain a deeper understanding of respiratory disease.

The pediatric radiology community showed up in Boston, and so did the momentum. The conversations that started last week won't stop here.

IPR 2026, hosted by the The Society for Pediatric Radiology & ESPR- European Society of Paediatric Radiology, made one thing clear: the interest in functional lung imaging is real, and it is growing.

A standout moment: Katie Donohoe and colleagues at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center presented "Translating Xenon MRI into Practice: Insights from Two Years of Clinical Implementation." Hearing from a team that has brought Xenon MRI into actual clinical care for pediatric patients is exactly the kind of proof point this field needs.

The question threading through the entire meeting: how do we get more meaningful answers for children with pulmonary and cardiopulmonary disease, without adding to their radiation burden? Xenon MRI offers a path forward, with regional lung function visualization in a short, single breath-hold exam and no ionizing radiation required.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn about the XENOVIEW® MRI Platform! We are proud to be part of this community and the future of pediatric lung imaging.

Every child deserves imaging that provides meaningful clinical insights, without the burden of ionizing radiation. That work is already underway.
