The Secret to Lasting Mobility: Use It or Lose It!
At Ashburn Physical Therapy, we don’t just want to get you moving; we want to keep you moving safely and strongly. A common mistake in rehab is gaining new flexibility but forgetting to “lock it in.”
Why “The Window” Matters
When we perform manual therapy or specific Postural Restoration techniques, we create a “new window” of joint range of motion. This is the space where your joint can now move that it couldn’t before.
The Two-Step Success Formula:
1. Create the Space: Open up the joint range through expert clinical guidance.
2. Own the Space: Immediately follow up with strengthening exercises—like the shoulder internal rotation shown here—to teach your nervous system how to control that new range. The Result: If you don’t strengthen into that new window, your body will eventually stiffen back up to protect itself. Strengthening tells your brain: “It’s safe to be here!”Ready to reclaim your movement? Whether you’re recovering from surgery or managing spine health, our Raleigh team is ready to help you open those windows and build the strength to keep them open.

The Supine Chest Opener 🧘‍♂️✨
Inspired by the work of Connor Harris, this move is a game-changer for restoring proper breathing mechanics.
The goal? Expand the anterior chest wall while letting the neck and spine fully relax. By “shutting down” those high-tension areas, we create the optimal environment for rib cage expansion.
We use this daily at Ashburn Physical Therapy to help our clients:
✅ Reduce full-body tension
✅ Improve lung capacity
✅ Reset the nervous system
Stop fighting your own tension and start breathing through it.

Unlock Your Lower Body Mobility with Split Squats! 🦵✨
At Ashburn Physical Therapy, we know that great mobility is key to feeling your best and moving without limits. That’s why we’re highlighting the incredible benefits of the Split Squat!
Unlike traditional squats, the split squat really isolates one leg at a time, making it a powerhouse for improving flexibility and strength in your lower body.
Here’s why you should incorporate them into your routine:
• Enhanced Hip Flexor Flexibility: The trailing leg in a split squat gets a fantastic stretch, helping to lengthen tight hip flexors – a common issue from prolonged sitting!
• Improved Ankle Dorsiflexion: The front leg’s ankle goes through a significant range of motion, helping to increase flexibility in your ankles, which is vital for many daily activities and sports.
• Better Balance & Stability: Working one leg at a time challenges your balance, strengthening the smaller stabilizing muscles around your hips and ankles.
• Increased Lower Body Strength: Build powerful legs while simultaneously improving your range of motion. It’s a win-win!
• Reduced Risk of Injury: With better mobility and stability, your joints are better prepared to handle stress, helping to prevent strains and sprains.
Ready to move more freely? Try incorporating split squats into your exercise routine! If you’re unsure about your form or need personalized guidance to improve your mobility, our expert therapists at Ashburn Physical Therapy are here to help.
