Increasing attention is something parents often ask me about. Some of my favorite attentional strategies include:
🤫 minimizing your interruptions of their focused play (even for positive praise such as, “Good job!”)
🌽 offering real life opportunities to allow them to focus such as helping in the kitchen. Corn and mandarin oranges are two of my favorite foods for attention (and are great sensory activities as well)🍊

✈️Duxbury SLP was on the move! ✈️

You know that I love a good preview of an activity or trip before to set expectations, reduce fear of the unknown, and work in speech and language strategies, but what about a REVIEW afterwards? Do it! You can use the same books and materials (and any new materials/souvenirs/pictures from the trip) to talk about your adventure.

🚇You can talk about🚇
Sequencing- what happened, first, next, last
Wh-questions- where did you go, when, who was there, how did you get there, what did you bring?
Literacy targets- during joint book reading
Speech sound targets- words associated with the trip that have the target sound(s). Maybe even make a collage of the words.
Talk about the future- would you like to go there again? Where would you like to go? What do you think a trip there would be like?
You can also print your photos out in a book or just put them in an old album to help your little one remember and discuss the trip 📸

So many ideas, I could go on for days 🤣 Have you used a preview or review to help your child with a trip?

Do you ever make up bedtime stories to tell your children? As SLPs, we are trained to write stories for specific teaching purposes. We may tell a story to preview an idea or to describe “expected behavior”. As a parent, you can also use stories to preview any family changes that may be coming up. Did your children return to school full time? Elsa and Ana can too! Are they starting an after school activity, so is Mickey! Maybe grandparents are coming to visit? Turn the experience into a bedtime story a few times to familiarize your child with the change and how they/the characters will be affected. Tell what happens, how the characters feel, how others react to their feelings, and how the situation resolves. Give it a try tonight and let me know how it goes!

I love this graphic from ! It can be confusing when you hear one number from the pediatrician and another from an SLP. We may give you different cutoffs for the number of words that your kiddo should be using because the pediatrician is identifying the most delayed 10% of children. There are other kiddos who will fall into the delayed range but have more words than the minimum that the pediatrician uses. SLPs tend to focus on the average number of words children have at a given age (keep in mind that “average” is the middle 50%, so 50% of kids will have more words and 50% will have fewer). What did your child’s pediatrician say about their language development?
