Quick update if you've got an appointment with me coming up!

I've moved into a temporary space while some work gets done on my regular office. Same me, same equipment, same care — just a new address for now.

📍 272 St. George St., Duxbury.

Right at the Duxplex, between Farfars and Duxbury Pilates, about 200 yards from my usual spot.

The entrance is on the backside of Farfars — just look for my gray Toyota Tundra parked at the end of the building on the left 🛻, walk past my sign, and enter through the back door.

If you've got a visit scheduled, no need to do anything different, just head to the address above. And if it's been a while since I've seen you... now's as good a time as any to stop by and check out the new (temporary!) digs.

Exciting news on the horizon too: this fall, my Duxbury office reopens fully renovated, top to bottom. Can't wait to show you the new space.

"It's very difficult to understand how good you can feel until someone actually helps you feel that way."

I've said this to patients for years, and it never stops being true.

The day I stopped chasing symptoms and started creating safety was the day my patients stopped coming back with the same problems.

I used to be proud of my manual therapy skills and exercise prescriptions, but I was basically playing whack-a-mole with symptoms. When I shifted to helping people understand why their body felt the need to protect itself, everything changed—for them and for me.

Here's what I learned the hard way.

A woman came to see me for the third time this year with the same back pain. Same area, same intensity. The exercises I'd given her worked temporarily, but here she was again.

That's when it hit me.

Her body didn't trust that it was safe to change. Her nervous system was doing exactly what it's designed to do: protect her from perceived threat.

Think about it. When your brain senses danger—physical, emotional, even just chronic stress—it locks everything down. Muscles tighten, breathing gets shallow, posture compensates.

You can stretch and strengthen all you want, but if the nervous system doesn't feel safe, it'll pull you right back into those protective patterns.

So I started having different conversations with my patients. Instead of just analyzing their movement, I began asking what made their body feel unsafe in the first place.

The results?

Night and day difference. When someone's body genuinely feels safe to let go of old protective patterns... that's when posture naturally resets. Movement becomes fluid again. And the pain actually stays away because we're not fighting against their body's wisdom anymore.

At 56, dealing with my own health challenges, I've learned this firsthand: your body needs to trust the process before it'll allow real change.

I learned more about recovery lying in a hospital bed than in 20 years of PT school.

After my open-heart surgery and months of rehabilitation, I realized why so many of my patients hit walls in their recovery.

Some people in my cardiac rehab bounced back completely. Others with similar conditions stayed stuck, no matter how hard they worked.

The difference?

Whether their nervous system felt safe enough to heal.

Your body has this incredible built-in protection system that most therapists never talk about. When it senses danger - physical, emotional, or just uncertainty about movement - it locks everything down.

Muscles tighten. Breathing gets shallow. Recovery stalls.

Most physical therapy focuses on the mechanical stuff. Strengthen this, stretch that, improve range of motion.

But here's what I learned from both sides of the table...

If your nervous system doesn't trust that movement is safe, those exercises hit a wall every single time.

I see this with my back pain patients constantly. They do all the "right" exercises but still feel guarded. Still hold tension. Still worry about re-injury.

Here's why: Generic posture advice FAILS the moment you add rotation, power, or dynamic movement.

Your body's been warning you about back pain for months. You just don't speak its language yet.

Those subtle shoulder shifts during the day...
