Kiowa County Hospital District

Kiowa County Hospital District Kiowa County Hospital District is a community driven healthcare entity. We are continuously looking for future advancements and progression.

Our services will continue to meet and exceed the needs of the patients we care for. One of the earliest settlers in the Kiowa County area, George Weisbrod is fittingly remembered in the name of the hospital, which he helped establish. During his years in this area, Mr. Weisbrod often witnessed patients with serious illnesses sent by train to city hospitals, some arriving too late. Upon his death

in 1924, Mr. Weisbrod provided in his will a substantial amount of money and land to be set aside for the er****on of a hospital in Eads. Weisbrod Memorial Hospital began taken patients on April 1, 1943. The entire building was not placed into service immediately, but was used as necessity required and as equipment became available. Donations by organizations and individuals supplied necessary equipment. A trust between the people of Kiowa County and the Weisbrod Estate Board was set up to last 99 years. The District Court and the Weisbrod Estate Board selected the first trustees of the hospital. This board administered the hospital until 1965 when the new Kiowa County Hospital District Hospital was opened with a board of five (5) elected members. Both boards participate in the operation of the hosiptal, with trustees being appointed by the County Commisioners. The older hospital building was remodeled into a 9-bed nursing home, and a new wing was added to provide modern rooms, an isolated obstetrical wing, surgical and laboratory department. A new wing for the nursing home was built in 1970, all on land once owned and set aside by George Weisbrod.

We are excited to announce that Weisbrod Health has officially submitted our application for Colorado’s Rural Hospital Transformation Program funding!

This is a major step forward in our mission to strengthen rural healthcare and ensure our community has access to high-quality care close to home for future generations.

Our request includes $3.07 million in Year One funding as part of a five-year initiative that would help us expand services, invest in our workforce, upgrade critical equipment, and bring new care options right here to Kiowa County.

If approved, this funding would allow us to:

• Expand telehealth and remote monitoring services
• Add new specialty services like cardiac rehab, behavioral health support, and expand existing services like women’s health and diabetic care
• Invest in recruitment, retention, and training for our healthcare workforce
• Replace essential medical equipment and improve emergency services
• Strengthen technology and community outreach efforts

This proposal also supports the addition of seven new positions and would help reduce the need for patients to travel outside our community for care.

This application represents months of collaboration and hard work from teams across Weisbrod Health, along with support from our partners at the Eastern Plains Healthcare Consortium and the Colorado Rural Health Center. We are incredibly proud of the effort that went into this submission.

📅 What’s next?
The state will review applications over the next few months, with funding decisions expected in October.

No matter the outcome, we are proud of what this team has accomplished together. This effort reflects our shared commitment to improving healthcare for the people we serve every day.

A Bittersweet Part of Progress

This week marked a milestone in our clinic construction project that was perhaps the hardest to watch.

For as long as many of us can remember, two beautiful trees have stood beside our clinic. They’ve quietly watched over generations of our community and have simply always been there.

As part of preparing the site for our new clinic, those trees had to be removed.

In a community where every tree is treasured, this decision was not made lightly. They have been silent witnesses to thousands of patient visits, moments of healing, and difficult days alike.

As we build a new clinic designed to serve our community for generations to come, we hope to honor their legacy by creating a campus that continues to be welcoming, beautiful, and rooted in caring for our neighbors.

Thank you to these faithful guardians of our campus. You will be missed, but your place in the story of Weisbrod Health will not be forgotten.

We are excited to announce a monumental step forward as we begin our long-anticipated clinic construction project! This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for our hospital and community, and we are grateful for your support as we bring this vision to life.

Construction will begin this week with initial site work, including re-routing existing water lines and tree removal.

Please use extra caution and be patient when entering and exiting the clinic parking areas, as construction activity and equipment will be present.

If possible, we ask that you avoid using Luther Street as a through route to help reduce traffic in the construction zone and improve safety for everyone.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and excitement as we begin these important improvements. We look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses!

We can officially put one rumor to rest! 🚑 These photos are probably the best proof that our new ambulances do, in fact, fit inside the new ambulance building.

Not only do they fit, but there is plenty of room to open the doors and walk around the vehicles while they are inside the building.

One of the thoughtful design features of the new building is that our ambulances can pull straight through Bay 1 & Bay 2. This means no more backing in or out which is a safer, more efficient design that will make responding to emergencies just a little bit easier.

Construction has been moving quickly over the past two weeks! The roof and exterior building envelope are now in place, giving the building its recognizable shape.

The plumbing team was on-site this week installing the interior faucet and working on other things. We also finalized plans for the concrete floor slope and in-floor drainage system to ensure the building functions as efficiently as it was designed.

We're excited to continue sharing progress as this project comes to life. Thank you for following along with us!

We're Growing Our Primary Care Team!

We are excited to share that Shaelynn Rouse, BSN, RN will be joining the Weisbrod Health Rural Health Clinic as a Family Nurse Practitioner this October after completing her Family Nurse Practitioner program in August and successfully passing her board certification exams in September.

Many of you already know Shaelynn. She has been a valued member of the Weisbrod Health family since 2022, serving as our Clinic Manager and Registered Nurse while helping lead quality improvement initiatives and providing compassionate care to our patients every day.

When asked why she chose to continue her career at Weisbrod Health, Shaelynn shared:

"Choosing to practice at Weisbrod Health was an easy decision because it reflects the life and values I want for my family and the patients I care for every day. I was looking for a community where I could not only build my career, but also raise my children, stay connected to family, and truly feel at home.

This is the kind of close-knit community I grew up in—one where people know each other, support one another, and care deeply for their neighbors. That same spirit carries into the hospital, where personalized medicine and meaningful relationships allow me to care for patients in a way that feels both impactful and fulfilling.

Being close to Eastern Colorado, where I grew up, allows me to stay connected to family while continuing to learn and bring new knowledge and advancing medical practices back to our community. Most importantly, this is a place where family, connection, and quality care come first—and I am grateful to be part of it."

Shaelynn's dedication to compassionate, patient-centered care and her passion for rural healthcare make her an outstanding addition to our provider team. We know our patients will appreciate her clinical experience, familiar face, and commitment to serving our community.

Please join us in congratulating Shaelynn on this exciting milestone! We can't wait to welcome her as a Family Nurse Practitioner this fall.

Many of you have been asking how Dr. Ritch is doing during his sabbatical and whether he'll be returning to Weisbrod Health. We're happy to report that he's enjoying his summer, making the most of his time away, and is looking forward to being back this fall!

This photo was taken at the start of the Blue Sky Ascent, a challenging 14-mile race that begins at Echo Lake (10,600 feet) and climbs to the summit at 14,200 feet. Dr. Ritch and his wife, Gretel, completed the race in an impressive 3 hours and 40 minutes. The day before, they also ran a half marathon and set a new personal best, finishing the 13.1-mile race in 2 hours and 1 minute!

Next on their agenda is a two-month road trip across the country, where they'll be exploring new places, making memories, and capturing photos along the way. Dr. Ritch has promised to share some of his adventures with our community when he returns.

Mark your calendars! Dr. Ritch is scheduled to return to Weisbrod Health on September 7, 2026, where he will resume seeing patients in our Rural Health Clinic every other week while also serving as the Medical Director for the Rural Health Clinic.

We know many of our patients have been looking forward to his return, and so are we! Enjoy the adventure, Dr. Ritch and Gretel—we'll see you this fall!

Big News from Kiowa County Ambulance Service! 🚑

We are thrilled to introduce Shelby Warn, RN, EMT-B as the new Ambulance Manager for the Kiowa County Ambulance Service, which is owned and operated by Weisbrod Health!

Shelby brings an impressive background to our team, with extensive nursing experience as both an emergency room nurse and clinic nurse. She has also dedicated several years volunteering with Prowers County Ambulance and Fire Departments as an EMT-B.

Shelby joined us full-time back in May. In addition to leading the ambulance service, she will take on expanded responsibilities at the hospital as our Emergency Preparedness Officer — a critical role for our community's safety and resilience. She recently coordinated & facilitated a simulation event that included Bent County Dispatch, Kiowa County Sheriff Colorado department, Kiowa County Ambulance Services & the Weisbrod Health emergency department!! We are beyond excited to welcome her to our EMS team!!

We also want to take a moment to recognize Bob Carson, Paramedic & EMS Director at Lincoln Health for his support of our ambulance agency as interim Manager these past 6-months. His leadership was invaluable and his home cooked meals will be greatly missed! Additionally, we want to recognize Ken Flory for his continued support through these transitions as our local logistics coordinator and faithful Driver. We truly can't thank either of you enough!!

The Ambulance Agency has had a busy year so far & we wanted to take a moment to share some operation updates:

✅ Annual Re-Licensure — PASSED!
This past month, we welcomed state surveyors from Colorado for our annual re-licensure inspection. We're proud to report that we passed with flying colors! The surveyors also had the opportunity to inspect our two brand-new ambulances, which also cleared inspection. Both new units are now actively in service and ready to serve Kiowa County.

🏗️Construction Update:
Construction is officially underway on our NEW ambulance building! We are expecting completion in September 2026 and cannot wait to show you the finished result. Stay tuned — more updates to come as we make progress!

Thank you for your continued support of Weisbrod Health and the Kiowa County Ambulance Service, we hope the work we are doing makes you proud.
