Tennessee Equine Hospital Memphis is a full service equine veterinary clinic offering ambulatory services as well as outpatient and hospital care. Our facility, located in Arlington, TN, provides advanced diagnostics and emergency care 24/7. We have three full time veterinarians, one of which is trained in acupuncture and chiropractic, on site as well as a rotation of doctors and support staff fr

om the main hospital. The team of doctors specializes in surgery, medicine, alternative medicine, reproduction and lameness. Our goal is to share cutting edge diagnostics and treatments to the quality horses and horsemen in west Tennessee and the surrounding area.

Mosquito season = disease season. 🦟

Mosquitoes can transmit serious, potentially fatal diseases like West Nile Virus and Eastern/Western Equine Encephalitis (EEE/WEE) in horses.

Prevention, plus vaccination, is the best combo for keeping your horse protected this season.

Here's some ways to reduce mosquito exposure this summer:
✅ Use horse-safe fly/mosquito repellent regularly
✅ Turn on barn fans. Mosquitoes are weak fliers and avoid moving air!
✅ Eliminate standing water around the barn (buckets, tires, low spots that collect rain)
✅ Keep horses in during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn)
✅ Use fly sheets or masks for added protection
✅ Keep manure and organic debris cleaned up to reduce breeding sites

It’s August - and it’s HOT outside.
There are several things that you can do to help your horse - the most important is making sure they have plenty of water! In this weather, an average sized horse will easily drink 15 gallons of water a day. If they are working - they will drink more - water consumption can be 30 gallons a day. Mares nursing a foal require more water - 20 gallons a day or more in this weather. Foals will drink at least 8-10 gallons of water.
So access to plenty of cool clean water is primary!
Refilling water troughs and buckets frequently to keep the water cooler will help keep them hydrated in these temperatures. If possible - place the buckets or water troughs in the shade.

You can also add 1-2 tablespoons of loose white salt or electrolytes to their feed to encourage drinking.

Water can also be applied to the outside of the horse. Cold hosing them in the heat of the day will help bring their temperatures down.

Access to shade is important - whether that is natural shade - trees/woods or a man made shelter - shade helps immensely.

If it’s possible to have a fan on them in the barn or sheltered area - the moving air will help cool them as well.

If you are still working your horses - try and do so early mornings and late evenings so both of you aren’t out in the hottest time of day; and keep those workouts short and less intense.

Dr. Sarah received her bachelors from NC State University and her doctorate from The Ohio State University. She recently completed a field care internship at Hagyard Equine in Lexington, KY with a particular focus on reproductive and neonatology cases.
She is a native of Memphis and super excited to return back home and hit the ground running! In her free time she enjoys reading, dancing, and painting.

Dr. Phoebe has been with TEH West for 4 years. She graduated from Ross University, and finished her clinical year at Auburn University. Most recently Dr. Phoebe just completed her AVCA Certification for animal chiropractic care! In her free time she enjoys riding her mare ChaCha, and spending time with her two dogs Petal and Marigold.
