BRCA1 and BRCA2 get called “the breast cancer gene,” and that nickname does a lot of damage. It makes people assume it’s only a women’s issue and only about one cancer. Neither is true. A BRCA change can raise the risk of ovarian, prostate, melanoma, and pancreatic cancer too, and it’s inherited equally from either parent. That’s why your whole family’s history matters.

Knowing you carry it helps you go from reacting to getting ahead. It opens the door to earlier, more frequent screening and real options to lower risk.

Genetic testing is more accessible and more affordable than it’s ever been. The catch is that almost nobody is being told they qualify. Most of my patients apologize before they tell me their symptoms.
They shouldn't have to. But by the time someone gets to me, they've usually been through a few rounds of being told it's stress, or anxiety, or that everything looked normal so there's nothing more to do.
