👁️ Is It Time for Your Child's Routine Eye Exam?

Routine eye exams help evaluate your child's:

✅ Visual acuity (how clearly they see)
✅ Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
✅ Overall eye health

For children over age 5, regular eye exams can help identify vision issues that may affect learning, reading, and everyday activities.

📚 Some signs your child may benefit from a routine eye exam include:

🔹 Difficulty seeing the board at school
🔹 Difficulty reading
🔹 A failed vision screening by a school nurse or pediatrician
🔹 Frequent headaches not linked to a medical condition
🔹 Frequent blinking or eye rubbing
🔹 Annual preventive vision care

Healthy vision plays an important role in your child's success both inside and outside the classroom. Schedule a routine eye exam to help keep their eyes on the right track! You can reach our office at uceyecenter.com/contact.

👁️ Understanding Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, occurs when light entering the eye focuses behind the retina instead of directly on it. This can make nearby objects appear blurry. In more significant cases, distance vision may be affected as well.

📝 A small amount of hyperopia is normal in children. However, higher levels can lead to:

🔹 Blurred vision
🔹 Headaches during reading or close-up work
🔹 Amblyopia (lazy eye)
🔹 Strabismus (crossed eyes)

👓 Glasses or contact lenses can help refocus light properly and improve vision. Early detection and treatment are important to support healthy visual development.

Does your child struggle with headaches, blurry vision, double vision, or losing their place while reading? These may be signs of convergence insufficiency, a condition that affects how the eyes work together when focusing on near objects.

At UCEC, orthoptic therapy can help improve eye coordination skills through customized exercises designed specifically for your child’s needs. Therapy is monitored by Dr. Rose Hughes, O.D., and completed through a guided at-home program with remote support throughout the process.

Orthoptic therapy is commonly used to treat convergence insufficiency and certain forms of intermittent exotropia, helping many children experience more comfortable reading and better visual function.

👁️ What is Amblyopia (“Lazy Eye”)?

Amblyopia is reduced vision in one or both eyes that cannot be fully corrected with glasses alone, and is not caused by a structural problem in the eye itself.

It develops early in childhood, typically from birth to age 9, when the brain and eyes are still learning how to work together. If something causes a distorted visual experience during this critical period, the brain may begin to favor one eye over the other, affecting how vision develops.

Amblyopia most commonly impacts central vision, and early detection is key to effective treatment.

If you have concerns about your child’s vision, we’re here to help.

👁️ Is your child struggling to see clearly? It could be a refractive error.

Refractive errors happen when light doesn’t focus properly on the retina, leading to blurry vision. The three most common types are:

🔹 Myopia (near-sightedness): Difficulty seeing far away
🔹 Hyperopia (far-sightedness): Trouble focusing on nearby objects
🔹 Astigmatism: Blurred or distorted vision at all distances

The good news? These conditions are very common and can usually be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Early detection is key to preventing issues like eye strain, headaches, or even developmental vision problems.

If you’ve noticed your child squinting, struggling to read, or complaining about blurry vision, it may be time for an eye exam.

A little late, but too good not to share.

Last month, our team attended the AAPOS Annual Meeting 2026, where leaders in pediatric ophthalmology and optometry came together to share the latest in diagnosing and managing children’s eye conditions.

From advancements in myopia management to early detection of conditions like keratoconus, we’re excited to bring what we learned back to our clinic, and to the families we care for every day.

Does your child have blurry vision? If so, it might be a refractive error 👁️

Refractive errors happen when light doesn’t focus correctly on the retina, the part of the eye that helps create clear images. The three most common types are:

🔹 Myopia (nearsightedness) – Difficulty seeing far away
🔹 Hyperopia (farsightedness) – Difficulty seeing up close (and sometimes far away)
🔹 Astigmatism – Blurred or distorted vision at all distances

The good news? These conditions are very common—and very treatable. Glasses or contact lenses can help refocus light properly and restore clear vision.

Early detection is key to supporting your child’s visual development and preventing complications like eye strain, headaches, or learning difficulties.

If you have concerns about your child’s vision, we’re here to help! To set up an appointment today, contact us via our website at uceyecenter.com.
