Lois Kaiser

Lois Kaiser, a beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 1, 2026, after a courageous battle with AML, a rare form of leukemia. Lois was a constant source of love and strength throughout her life.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in her honor at St. Joseph Parish, in Sinsinawa, WI, on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Joseph Bellamkonda officiating. Family and friends may call from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL, where the parish rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a second visitation from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Monday at St. Joseph Church. Private family burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Born on July 6, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Joseph P. and Mary (Herkes) Kress, Lois’s life told a story of dedication, love, and service. Lois attended Holy Trinity School and later St. Joseph Academy for girls. Lois grew up on Rhomberg Avenue in the Point District. Her youth was spent riding her bike across town without worry and hiking the hills to Eagle Point Park. In her early years, Lois held a variety of jobs, including positions at SS Kresge, John W. Law Accounting, Flexsteel Industries, and the Melody Mill, where she met a tall good-looking lad from Wisconsin named Jerome. Their three-year courtship blossomed into a lifelong romance, and they were married on November 9, 1963. Lois and Jerome shared 56 years of marriage before Jerome, the love of her life, passed away in 2020.

With Jerome by her side, Lois, once a city girl, wholeheartedly embraced farm life. She became a devoted farm wife and loving mother, raising their five children in a warm and nurturing home. Her children were her deepest source of pride and joy. Lois took great pleasure in life on the farm, especially in gardening, canning, tending to daily chores, and bringing family together for special occasions. She also treasured the family’s summer vacations to the Wisconsin Dells, where countless cherished memories were created.

Family was at the heart of Lois's life, and her legacy lives on through the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild she loved so dearly. With the growing family, vacations took on a special meaning for Lois and Jerome. From weekends spent camping at local campgrounds to cross-country adventures in a large van or motorhome, Lois and Jerome cherished time with their children and grandchildren, gathering to celebrate special family occasions and strengthen family bonds. Lois took immense pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and found happiness in being part of their lives. She was a faithful supporter of their sporting events, school programs, and performances, celebrating every accomplishment with genuine enthusiasm, encouragement, and love.

A devout Catholic, Lois was deeply involved in St. Joseph Parish, in Sinsinawa, where she served as an officer with the Christian Mothers organization, taught CCD classes, and volunteered at parish events. Her passion for helping others extended to the local 4-H club, where she was a club leader for many years.

Her greatest accomplishment, however, was her tireless advocacy for individuals with special needs. Lois worked to create meaningful employment opportunities at Sinsinawa Mound for her daughter, Karen, and her classmates, an effort that made a lasting and meaningful difference in their lives.

Lois returned to the workforce when her children were grown, spending 25 years at Dubuque Bank and Trust. Her colleagues remember her not just for her professionalism but for her kindness and the genuine friendships she formed.

Those left to cherish Lois’ memories include her five children, Steve (Kathy) Kaiser, Dennis (Katrina) Kaiser, Janet (Kirk) Mack, Diane (William) Pearce, and Karen Kaiser; her thirteen grandchildren, Holly (Matt) Clendenen, Ryan (Tara) Kaiser, Adam (Brooke) Kaiser, Stacy (Tom) Pickel, Aaron (Mallory) Kaiser, Nicholas Kaiser, Kailee Kaiser, Caden Kaiser, Courtney (Maverick) Mack, Josh (Kerry) Pearce, Jessica (Tyler) Speth, Melissa Pearce, Becca Pearce; her twenty-one great-grandchildren, Carter, Kennedy & Kellen Clendenen, Callie, Charlotte, & Keston Kaiser, Charlee, Hayden, Dexter, & Archie Kaiser, Kobe, Ezra, & Harper Pickel, Everett, Elliott, Emmory, & Enzlee Kaiser, William Pearce & baby girl Pearce due in June, and Macy & Maverick Speth; her great-great-grandchild, Kaysen Walker; her siblings, Jim (Mary) Kress, Tom (Kathy) Kress, Dan (Gina) Kress, Jayne (Dick) Breitbach, & Rick Kress; and her sister-in-law, Germaine (Jim) Hying.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerome; her sister-in-law, Shelley Kress; brothers/sisters-in-law, Ireneaus (Myrtle) Kaiser, Norbert (Gracie) Kaiser, and Jeanette (Harvey) Schroeder; niece, Linda (Kaiser) Sue; and nephews, Jason and Jamie Kress.

Her children wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to their sister Diane and her husband Will for their love and support over the past eight years. As their father’s health declined, Diane and Will made the selfless decision to move in with Lois, Jerome, and Karen, providing daily care and unwavering support. Their kindness and sacrifice will forever be remembered. The family also extends their sincere appreciation to the doctors and staff at the Cancer Center at MercyOne, as well as the dedicated caregivers at Hospice of Dubuque, for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided throughout this journey.

In remembering Lois, her family and friends celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love and laughter. Her legacy continues to inspire all who knew her. As we bid her farewell, we take solace in knowing that her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. In her own words, Lois wanted everyone to remember: “Laugh with me, laugh at me, but no matter what, laugh—because laughter is the best medicine.”

Daniel (Dan) E. Petitgout

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Daniel (Dan) E. Petitgout announces his passing. Daniel, 84, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, IA, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. While he will be profoundly missed, his family finds deep peace in knowing he has been reunited in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Karen, whom he missed dearly.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026, and from 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, at the Frentress Lake Event Center, 818 W. Gill Rd, in East Dubuque, IL, where the Parish Scripture Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Bosco Aruldoss officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Daniel was born on July 19, 1941, in Dubuque, IA, to Laurence J. and Jean A. (Fleege) Petitgout. After graduating from East Dubuque High School, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army on November 25, 1962.

He proudly served until February 6, 1967, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class. His service, which included time during the Cuban Missile Crisis, earned him the Expert Marksmanship Badge (M1 Rifle), Marksman Badge (Carbine), and the Army Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity. Daniel lived a life of honor, duty, and deep love for his country.

On November 5, 1971, Dan married Karen Kruser at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kieler, WI. Together, they built a meaningful life rooted in faith, family, and a relentless work ethic. Dan was a proud, lifelong member and supporter of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in East Dubuque, IL.

Dan possessed a lifelong passion for the Mississippi River. What started as a vision, paired with a fierce work ethic, evolved into their cherished family business, Frentress Lake Marina. Dan worked passionately alongside his wife and children to build a legacy they would love and cherish for generations. A true visionary, Dan successfully launched and operated several other businesses throughout his life, including Top Block and Brick, the Silver Eagle Event Center, and Timmerman’s Motel.

Some of Dan’s fondest memories were made on the water. As a Coast Guard Auxiliarist, he had the distinct honor of escorting President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter down the Mississippi River. In his younger years, he could often be found pulling skiers behind his boat, aptly named "Wet & Wild."

Dan created countless lifelong memories with his children, grandchildren, and dear friends. His family will keep his spirit alive in the quiet, everyday moments: while drinking morning coffee, sipping a Diet Pepsi, cruising on the golf cart, "pushing dirt around," watching his favorite news channel, and enjoying the river. They will forever cherish memories of sharing a burger at Paul’s Tap or reminiscing over a hearty breakfast at Sunshine.

Dan's legacy will be lovingly carried on by his children, Timothy Petitgout (Tina Dammen), Laura (Scott) Leibfried, and Ted (Elaina) Petitgout; his grandchildren, Kaila, Isabella, Mason, Brice, Gracie, Aleya, Ellyana, and Ivy Rose; his great-grandchildren, Camdyn, Camiya, and Aria; and numerous other cherished family members and friends.

After graduation, Louie joined the U.S. Navy. He completed bootcamp training at Great Lakes, Detroit and electronic training in Memphis, TN. He was based with the Navy out of Sanford, FL and spent much time on aircraft carriers which set sail from Norfolk, VA. Louie served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Cold War. He was also honored to celebrate the Blue Nose Award by crossing the Arctic Circle. While serving on the U.S. Aircraft Carrier, USS Forrestal CV-59, Louie suffered a broken ankle during a hurricane. However, at age 55, Louie’s heart condition wouldn’t allow him to continue working any longer and he retired.

One evening, Louie was awakened by his expecting wife, to discover a fire at The Hilltop Tavern. Louie saved the lives of two men that evening. He joined the Menomine-Dunleith Fire department and served for 20 years, holding positions of Secretary and Treasurer. He cherished the years he served with his fellow members and admire all of them.

Louie was a proud member of Nativity BVM Church in Menominee, IL, where he enjoyed setting up the electrical and sound system for the annual church festival.

Louie loved fishing, duck hunting, and running trout lines with his boys. In retirement, Louie enjoyed rebuilding old tractors and could always be counted on to help neighbors and family whenever needed.

He cherished his travel to Germany where he was able to meet several extended Röepsch family members.

Louie’s family always receives endless comments from those whom met him about how great and interesting of a guy he is. Louie made friends everywhere he went. Those who met him enjoyed his never-ending stories. He was ever a socialite and “handsome”.

Dale Louis Paulsen

February 3, 1937 - May 9, 2026

Dale Louis Paulsen, age 89, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque from a sudden illness. He was born on February 3, 1937, in Bellevue, Iowa, the son of loving parents, Harry and Berneda (Feltes) Paulsen who preceded him in death.

Dale proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959—and he often said he’d be ready to serve again, even just two weeks ago. After his service, he began a long and industrious career at John Deere while also building his own company, Paulsen Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.. Never one to sit still, Dale later opened The Old Farmhouse in East Dubuque, Illinois, where he refurbished, displayed, and sold his collection of antique pedal tractors and farm toys.

A true tinkerer and inventor, Dale spent countless hours creating and patenting new ideas—some successful, some just good stories. He once invested heavily in a water-saving invention, only to find out the “minimum water usage” was never meant to begin with, saving them nothing, but he always laughed about it.

Dale loved the Mississippi River, where he was known as Digger, and the people who made time there so special. He was known for his stories, his love of John Deere machinery, and his ever-present Marine Corps hat or shirt—a proud reflection of two lifelong passions.

Dale is survived by five children which are from his marriage to Benay Brys-: Michael (Tina) Paulsen, of East Dubuque, IL, Cynthia Kirch-Henderson (Kent), San Tan Valley, AZ; Dale Paulsen, Jr, of Dubuque, IA; Bryan (Linda) Paulsen, of Cuba City, WI. Sherri Kubly, of Dubuque, IA. He is also survived by his special friend Agnes Steffensmeier, of Dyersville, IA; nine grandchildren—Jonathan Paulsen, Shannon Paulsen, Justin Kirch, Tonya Bowman, Joseph Paulsen, Leta Hageman, Bailey Paulsen, Jesse Hansel, and Mitchell Helle—and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are his brother, Robert Paulsen, of Bellevue, IA; niece, Lisa Schroeder; and nephew, Marc Paulsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, wife, Marie Motsch Pausen; sister-in-law LeMay Paulsen; and son-in-law, Kevin Kubly.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 11:00 -2:00 p.m. at Off Shore Event Center, Bellevue, IA. Graveside services with military honors conducted by the Dubuque Marine Corps League will follow on July 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Dale lived his life with energy, humor, and heart. He never lost his curiosity, his work ethic, or his love of conversation—and those who knew him will forever remember his laugh, his stories, and his deep pride in his family, his service, and his community. He also had a sweet tradition of handing out Hershey's Kisses to anyone lucky enough to be around him, sharing a little kindness everywhere he went.

Matthew John Trannel, 48, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, passed away peacefully into eternal life after a 10-year battle with Myotonic Dystrophy, on Friday, May 8, 2026, at home.

A time to gather and celebrate Matt’s life will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, IA. Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Matt will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in East Dubuque, Illinois. An additional visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church prior to the Mass. Burial will be at the East Dubuque Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Matt’s family to be used at a later date.

Matt was born January 7, 1978, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son of John and Mary (Weber) Trannel. He married the love of his life, Jill Harmsen, on July 6, 2002, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa.

Matt grew up in East Dubuque. He went to St. Mary's Catholic grade school and graduated from Wahlert High School in 1996. He continued his education at St. Ambrose University, in Davenport, where he earned a scholarship to run track and cross country. While at St. Ambrose, he enjoyed his time with his many teammates and friends and more importantly met Jill. He graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Matt worked in accounting until his Myotonic Dystrophy led him into an early retirement. Matt then supported his wife’s dream of owning a preschool with unwavering love and support.

Matt loved all sports and most of his conversations revolved around his favorite teams and reciting key stats from seemingly every professional athlete. His favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Cubs. His love for baseball started at five years old when a special moment in his life was being able to play on his older brother Jason’s team that their dad coached. Besides baseball, he played basketball, soccer, golf, ran cross country and track, and was a Boy Scout for many years. To honor Matt’s love of sports, the family welcomes you to wear your favorite team apparel or colors to the celebration of life on Friday.

Matt’s favorite thing to do was spend time with family. He always looked forward to cookouts, camping, golfing, and game nights. Game nights could get competitive in the Trannel household and he even taught himself euchre at a young age so that he could participate.

Matt loved to travel. His memorable trips included any beach destination, Disney World, Wisconsin Dells, fishing trips to Canada, and a trip out west with his parents and siblings that he never stopped sharing memories of. Matt and Jill’s favorite trip was when they went on a cruise to the Caribbean, where Matt proposed.

Matt is survived by his wife, Jill; his father and mother, John and Mary Trannel; his sister, Michelle Trannel; his brother, Jason (Karen) Trannel; his father-in-law, David (Monica) Harmsen; his mother-in-law, Mary “Chris” Harmsen; brothers-in-law, Ryan Harmsen, Tyler Harmsen, and Garrett (Kristyn) Harmsen; his nieces and nephew, Madeline, Abigail, Hannah, and Emmett; his uncles, Tom (Dena) Trannel, Jeffrey (Lauri) Trannel, Jerry (Diane) Trannel, Joe (Cindy) Weber, Bob Leifker, Wendell Comer; his aunts, Marie Trannel, Mary C.
