Traumatic Brain Injury Research

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Research is one of several areas of rehabilitation research conducted at

TBI Research at Kessler Foundation examines common affects of brain injury, including fatigue and difficulty in thinking, learning, and memory. TBI research studies are non-invasive and use various forms of testing; a method of expertise is neuroimaging--in which researchers can observe changes in the brain before and after treatment as well as while an individual performs a specific thinking acti

vity. The Foundation partners with Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation to bring the latest discoveries to patient care. Kessler Foundation's innovative research is noted around the world. Thanks to willing research participants and the dedication of our researchers, lives are improving. Kessler Foundation is one of only nine centers in the US to have dual model systems in traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. Model systems are federally-funded grants that promote collaboration through research to develop a standard of care for treating the injury and identify lifestyle issues that matter most to people with TBI. The Northern New Jersey TBI System (NNJTBIS) is a collaborative effort between Kessler Foundation and Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. As a data collection center, Kessler Foundation follows individuals with TBI from the time of injury throughout their lives. This allows researchers to identify differences in treatment throughout communities and ethnicities as well as areas that need further exploration to improve the quality of life for individuals with TBI.

Falls can be a serious concern for people living with traumatic brain injury. Could the way a person moves help identify who is most at risk?

Kessler Foundation researchers Kiran K. Karunakaran, PhD, and Easter Selvan, PhD, recently presented their research at the 2026 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference. Their work explores movement-related signs that could help identify fall risk among people with TBI, supporting efforts to improve rehabilitation and prevent injuries.
