If you’ve been anywhere in the mom-space on social media this summer you’ve probably seen posts with the hashtag or . The sentiment is that you have only so many summers with your kids so you better make them count. Well, I’m getting tired of hearing it.
First of all, it’s just not true. Do kids somehow disappear after 18 years? Maybe they go off to college or get a job, but many kids stay nearby or continue to live at home. I also have plenty of friends who are raising their children in the same town as their parents and still spend all summer with them. So it’s possible you’ll be spending future summers with not only your children, but your grandchildren as well!
Second of all, childcare during the summer is a mess. If you work full-time during the summer, it’s exhausting and expensive to patch together childcare or camps for your kids. For many people, summer is extra stressful because of this. And what if you’re a teacher? Sure, you get the summer off from teaching children, but now you have to entertain your own all summer? No thanks.
Also, (and I’ve said this many times before) summer with children is HARD! You couldn’t pay me to go back to the summer when my son was born and my daughter was two years old. I was so happy in September for her to go to preschool and for him to have a sitter. Don’t get me started on the sunscreen, the wagons you need to bring to the beach, the late bedtimes, etc.
And last, maybe you’re not even a summer person. It’s hot. It’s humid. There are a LOT of bugs. Maybe you’re happier building snowmen and sledding with your kids.
So, if you’ve come across this ridiculous trend on social media and it’s tugging at your heartstrings and making you feel guilty, stop scrolling! Unfollow. Enough with the guilt.
