It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard E. Dean, MD, former chair of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine's Department of Surgery. He passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 91.

Dr. Dean dedicated his career to advancing surgical education, research, and patient care. A proud Michigan State University alumnus, he earned his medical degree from Wayne State University before completing his surgical training at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Following service as a surgeon with a MASH unit in Vietnam and leadership roles in Cincinnati, he returned to Michigan State University in 1973 to lead the affiliated surgical residency program at Butterworth Hospital. In 1984, he became chair of the MSU Department of Surgery, a position he held until his retirement in 2001.

During his tenure, Dr. Dean helped shape generations of surgeons and played a pivotal role in the growth of surgical education and research at Michigan State University. His work in immunology, transplantation, nutrition, and trauma systems contributed significantly to the advancement of surgical science in Michigan and beyond. Nationally recognized for his contributions to academic surgery, he was a founding member and seventh president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (Association for Surgical Education) and was honored with numerous distinguished awards throughout his career.

Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Dean will be remembered as a respected mentor, educator, colleague, and leader whose influence continues to be felt throughout the Department of Surgery and the broader surgical community. His legacy lives on through the countless surgeons, residents, students, and faculty members whose careers he helped shape, as well as through the Dr. Richard E. and Christine Dean Endowed Professorship in Immunology and Molecular Biology.

Our thoughts are with Dr. Dean's family, friends, former colleagues, and all who were fortunate to know him. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of service, excellence, and dedication to Michigan State University and the field of surgery.

We are saddened to announce Pamela S. Haan, RN, BSN, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026, after her long battle with breast cancer.

Pam was a Lansing native, graduating from Waverly High School. She received her Nursing diploma from Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and then went on to earn Magna Cum Laude from Mercy College of Detroit with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She then returned to Lansing providing care at Saint Lawrence (UM-Sparrow) Hospital working with adult & pediatric surgical and orthopedic patients, as well as a home care planner.

Pam joined the MSU Department of Surgery in 1989. In her long tenure with the department, she was an originator of the Comprehensive Breast Health Clinic with Dr. Janet Osuch and served in numerous roles such as patient education coordinator, trauma research nurse, breast biopsy database research nurse, research project coordinator/manager and nurse navigator to our Breast Cancer High Risk Assessment clinic, Pink Impact Breast Care Komen program and Breast Cancer Interdisciplinary clinic.

In her role in research, she co-authored 29 publications, and 26 presentations and wrangled countless residents’ research. She was recognized for her work including the 2010 Susan G Komen Outstanding Volunteer of the Year and the 2017 Lansing State Journal Community Service Award.

Pam supported countless patients facing Breast Cancer, drawing from her own experience to guide and comfort others. She was first diagnosed in 2000, and again in 2019, meeting each challenge with strength and grace.

Pam had a special way of comforting others during some of their hardest moments, whether through her work or in her own community. She often made home visits and brought meals, always showing up with kindness.

Due to the recurrence of breast cancer, Pam medically retired after 35 years of service in 2024. Our thoughts are with Pam’s family – her husband Cal, children Andrew (Joey), Emily (Colin), and Michael, and grandchildren Hayden and Kennedy, and her beloved large extended family. Pam was a devoted member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and Capital Area Down Syndrome Association. Pam was a respected colleague and beloved friend, and we will miss her dearly.

We are happy to announce Beatrice Lucchesi has been awarded the 2025 Dr. David S. & Elaine O. Trump Surgery Scholarship!

Beatrice is currently completing her fourth year of medical school at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and is thrilled to begin plastic surgery residency at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids this July.

Born in Italy, Beatrice immigrated with her family to Michigan at twelve years old and went on to become the first in her family to attend college in the United States and medical school. Her passion for surgery was first ignited during a shadowing experience at the end of high school. As an artist, she was drawn to the unique ability of plastic surgeons to restore form and function tailored to the specific needs of patients from all walks of life and on nearly every part of the human body. She cultivated this interest via dedicated research and clinical experiences within plastic surgery, authoring multiple peer-reviewed publications, and through her work as an anatomy prosector.

As a member of both Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society, Beatrice has demonstrated a deep commitment to leadership and community throughout her training. Following her grandmother's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, she founded Music for Dementia (MFD), a multi-chapter volunteer organization which focuses on customized music sessions to support individuals living with dementia. Today MFD counts seven chapters within and outside of Michigan and continues to grow. Now trilingual, Beatrice aims to bring a cross-cultural perspective to training and serve patients from diverse backgrounds. Learn more about Music for Dementia (MFD) at: https://www.musicfordementiami.org/

She is honored to receive the Dr. David S. & Elaine O. Trump Surgery Scholarship as she embarks on her career as a plastic surgeon.
