What Does Your Coverage Look Like for Mental Health Services?
This is one of the questions I wish I got asked more often. And honestly, it's one of the most important ones.
Medicare does cover mental health services, and it's okay to need them. But the details matter, and most people have no idea what their plan actually includes until they need it.
Here's what Medicare generally covers:
🧠Outpatient therapy and counseling with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or licensed clinical social worker
🧠Inpatient mental health care if hospitalization is needed
🧠Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
🧠Screenings for depression, which are covered at no cost under preventive benefits
A few things worth knowing:
👉 The 20% coinsurance applies to most outpatient mental health services under Original Medicare, the same as other outpatient care. If you have a supplement or an Advantage plan, your costs may look different.
👉 Not every provider accepts Medicare. If you're looking for a therapist or counselor, it's worth asking before your first appointment.
This is not a small thing. Mental health is health. And you deserve to know what you have access to before you need it.
If you have questions about how your specific plan handles mental health coverage, send me a completely confidential message. That is exactly what I am here for you!
