National Healthy Aging Month: Keep Moving, Keep Thriving 💪

Regular movement is an important part of healthy aging, helping improve strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility while supporting independence and reducing the risk of falls, injuries, and chronic pain. You don’t need intense workouts to see the benefits—simple activities like walking, stretching, and light exercise can help manage joint stiffness, muscle weakness, and decreased range of motion. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or managing ongoing aches and pains, a personalized approach to movement can help you stay active safely and confidently. This National Healthy Aging Month, remember that small, consistent habits can make a lasting impact on your quality of life. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we’re proud to help Long Islanders stay active, independent, and feeling their best at every stage of life.

If your workday ends with a stiff, achy neck, you're not alone. Hours of sitting, screen-staring, and forward-leaning posture put serious strain on your neck and shoulders — and over time, those small aches can turn into chronic pain. 💻

Pay attention if you notice stiffness that lingers after work, headaches starting at the base of your skull, tingling or numbness in your arms, or trouble turning your head like you used to. These are your body's way of telling you something needs to change.

The good news is that a few simple adjustments can make a big difference. Try keeping your screen at eye level, relaxing your shoulders instead of hunching, taking a movement break every 30 to 45 minutes, and stretching your neck throughout the day.

Most importantly, don't just push through the pain and hope it fades. Early treatment makes all the difference, and our team can help you find the root cause and get lasting relief.

New year, new classes... and unfortunately, sometimes new aches! Heavy, poorly fitted backpacks are among the most common causes of neck, shoulder, and back pain in students.🎒

Here are a few quick tips to keep your kids pain-free this school year:
✅ Keep it light — a loaded backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of your child's body weight
✅ Use BOTH straps — wearing a pack on one shoulder throws the spine out of alignment
✅ Tighten the straps — the bag should sit snug against the back, not sagging below the waist
✅ Pack smart — heaviest items closest to the back, and clear out what isn't needed
✅ Watch for warning signs — slouching, complaints of soreness, or red marks on the shoulders

Backpack pain doesn't have to be part of the school routine. If your student is dealing with ongoing discomfort, our team is here to help them start the year feeling their best! 💪

The Truth About Kinesio Taping

You've seen it on athletes, those colorful strips of tape on shoulders, knees, and backs. But what does kinesiology tape actually do? Let's break it down.

What it CAN help with:
🔹 Supporting muscles and joints without restricting movement
🔹 Reducing swelling and improving circulation
🔹 Providing sensory feedback that may help reduce pain
🔹 Complementing your recovery during rehab

What it WON'T do:
🔹 Replace proper treatment or strengthening
🔹 Fix the root cause of an injury on its own
🔹 Turn you into a pro athlete overnight

The bottom line? Kinesio taping can be a helpful tool, but it works best as part of a complete treatment plan, not a standalone fix. When applied correctly by a trained professional, it can support your body while you do the real work of healing.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we use taping as one part of a personalized approach to help you move and feel your best. 💪

Can Physical Therapy Help You Avoid Surgery?

For many people dealing with pain or injury, the answer is yes, and it's worth exploring your options first.

Research shows that for a range of conditions, like rotator cuff injuries, knee osteoarthritis, herniated discs, and more, physical therapy can be just as effective as surgery, without the risks, downtime, or recovery period. 💪

Here's how PT can help:
🔹 Strengthens the muscles supporting the injured area
🔹 Improves mobility and range of motion
🔹 Reduces pain and inflammation naturally
🔹 Addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms

Surgery is the right call for some situations, but it shouldn't always be the first step. A personalized PT plan may get you back to doing what you love, no operating room required.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we'll assess your condition and build a plan designed to help you heal and move better.

Sciatica vs. Lower Back Pain: What's the Difference?

They might feel similar, but they're not the same thing—and knowing which one you're dealing with matters for getting the right treatment.

🔹 Lower back pain typically stays put. Think aching, stiffness, or soreness concentrated in the lumbar region, often from muscle strain, poor posture, or overuse.

🔹 Sciatica travels. It's caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, sending sharp, shooting, or burning pain down through the buttock and leg—sometimes with tingling or numbness.

The good news? Both respond really well to targeted physical therapy. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we identify the root cause and build a plan to get you moving—and feeling—better. 💪

Don't just push through the pain; reach out, and let's figure out what's going on.

Soccer is tough on the knees and ankles. All that sprinting, cutting, and sudden stopping puts these joints under serious stress, making sprains, strains, and ligament injuries some of the most common setbacks of the season.

The good news? A little prep goes a long way. Proper warm-ups, targeted strengthening, balance work, and good footwear can dramatically lower your risk — and keep you on the field instead of the sidelines. 💪

Whether you're a weekend player or a competitive athlete, our team at Island Sports Physical Therapy can help you build strength, improve stability, and step into the season with confidence.
