Let’s do some detective work together :)
I love diving deep into herbs beyond the quick “good for”.
Really critically thinking and trying to connect the dots to allow for out of the ordinary or disappeared benefits and abilities.

Lemonbalm- noted helpful for:
Cognitive support (enhanced concentration and clarity)
Digestive support (cramps, aches, biliousness)

Ahhhh…. goldenrod.

Goldenrod is a native North American keystone plant species.
Liz, a Naturalist friend of mine compared goldenrod in the plant world to Oak in the tree world in relation to keystone (essential to their ecosystems) attributes. I found this really interesting and fell even more in love with this golden treasure.

Medicinally, I think about the powerful work it does to help lower histamine response and tissue inflammation while environmentally I think of all the fellow creatures it will fuel for their long migratory journeys.

So a couple folks have sent messages asking what we are actually doing for the Earth since I have been posting about Ecological Herbalism.

Heck yes! Hold us all accountable. Greenwashing is a plague.

For a quick moment, my heart grew anxious as the perfection pressure set in.
Would my answer be enough for them?
And then my advice to you sunk into my own consciousness- Do my best and continue trying to learn more. We’re doing just that.

So, I thought I’d share my answer with all of you because you may be wondering the same thing but just didn’t feel comfortable asking. I get it!

We:
1) Stopped being a business over 8 years ago and shifted to a social enterprise model. Purpose over profit.
2) Preserve forested land by saving $.50 from every product we sell and putting it in a Forest Savings account to purchase and preserve forested land to be a future old growth forest.
In the past 5 years of doing this, we’ve been able to preserve 30 woodland acres. We are small but whatever we can do will make a difference to those calling that forest home.
3) Use packaging that is specially made because it isn’t readily available on the market. 100% recycled AND backyard compostable. Yes it costs significantly more but we hope to create the demand and maybe it will become an option readily available for anyone seeking.
4) Purchase herbs sustainably, regionally grown whenever possible and always organic or naturally grown. Our teas are all deforestation free and animal friendly.
5) Donate 100% of profit from Trail Magic tea and a chunk from our own savings to Appalachian environmental non profits while actively participating in environmental activism.
6) Do not pay profit to any company abusing the land or peoples and animals who call it home. We do deep research and follow through so you don’t have to when it comes to tea.
7) Educate a ton so others can fall in love with our shared home and tend to it as it tends to us.
8) Use compostable tape, seed paper cards, minimal packaging, repurposed and/or compostable packing materials, all recycled paper in house (even our toilet paper), and the is just goes in forever.
9) Zero generative AI
10) Continue to learn

Im currently compiling a book while learning from Entomologists, Ecologists, and other Naturalists to offer the best information that I can.

Herbal wisdom from my teachers and elders such as David Winston, Phyllis Light, Rosemary Gladstar, Lisa Bedner and more allow me to peek into this path.

I’m sharing this practice now because it’s time for as many herbalists as possible to also be environmental activists.
Through better knowing our ecosystem, we can better adjust our role within it.

It’s not easy. It’s learning herbalism, ecology, and environmentalism.
It’s pushing through perfectionist paralyzation that can sometimes come with environmentalist territory and refusing to fast food culture the concept.

It takes effort, but that’s our offering back to the plants that have offered us food, medicine, oxygen and shelter since the beginning of our time.
