You’re treating pain like a stop sign. And it’s keeping you stuck.

The Stoplight System is something myself and our clients use daily. It helps us decide what to do when pain shows up during training, rehab sessions or during home programming.

🟢 0 to 3/10, not worsening: keep going, progress gradually. 🟡 4 to 6/10, settles after, nothing sharp: modify one variable and continue.
🔴 7+/10, sharp and intense. stop that movement for right now. Come back at a later date. Find an entry point elsewhere, get assessed if it sticks around.

This allows you to be the decision maker and keep moving. You’re following a framework and making an informed decision rather than going in blindly. Allowing you to keep moving. A lot of the time things clean up.

And remember: all lights eventually turn green.

Save this for your next session. Share it with the training partner who thinks every twinge or tweak means stop.

Sure, SpongeBob makes recovery look like magic.

Some say it’s magic. It wasn’t. It was these principles I use.

🎯 Intention. Skillful and purposeful plan. Every session & movement has a reason.

🤝 The right environment. Encouraging, supportive, judgement-free. People can’t heal in a setting where they feel rushed and unheard.

🌈 Reassurance. Restoring confidence, desensitizing the nervous system, and educating people on what pain actually means.

✅ Permission to move. Most people have been told what they CAN’T do for so long they’ve forgotten what they CAN.

📶 Graded exposure. A slow, structured return to the things you love. Find the entry point

🏋️ Progressive overload. Gradual increase in stress over time. The body adapts when you challenge it with the right dose.

💪 Capacity. The real goal isn’t pain-free, it’s resilience. A body that can handle the demands of your actual life.

It’s not flashy but it works.

Sometimes all people really need is time, permission to move, reassurance, a plan, and an environment built for learning, growing, changing, and the ups and downs.

That’s most of it. Here’s what it looks like in practice.

✅ Intention. A real plan, built for the person in the room. Not a printout, not a generic protocol.
✅ Reassurance. Most pain isn’t causing tissue damage.
✅ Permission to move. The thing you’re afraid to do is often the thing you need.
✅ Graded exposure. Start where you are, then add stress with purpose.
✅ Progressive overload. The right load, in the right dose, at the right time.
✅ The right environment. The work has to happen somewhere it actually transfers. Safe, supportive, and conducive to learning.
✅ Capacity. Raise the floor and build the buffer. Progress isn’t a straight line, and a bigger floor makes the dips part of the process instead of a reason to start over.

It takes time, consistency, patience, and refinement.
