Sometimes our greatest teachers are sitting right in front of us.
Last year, after one of my yoga classes, 87 year old Audrey asked if she could stay behind to sketch me as I moved through a yoga pose.
At the time, I had no idea she was an accomplished artist, interior designer, and author. I simply knew her as Audrey—a warm, joyful presence who made every class brighter.
That single sketch sparked an idea.
What if yoga could become an art lesson?
What if movement could inspire creativity?
What if older adults could experience yoga through an entirely different lens?
That moment became The Art Of Series.
Since then, more than 1,500 older adults have experienced these interactive workshops, where movement, mindfulness, creativity, and lifelong learning come together in unexpected ways.
This week, it was especially meaningful to come full circle and teach alongside Audrey at The Bristal Assisted Living North Woodmere NY.
Together we explored the bold, energetic style of Keith Haring. As I moved through yoga poses, participants transformed those poses into expressive drawings inspired by one of America’s most iconic artists.
Watching a room full of older adults laugh, create, and discover a new way to experience yoga reminded me why I love this work.
Sometimes the best ideas don’t begin with a business plan.
Audrey—thank you for inspiring a program that has brought creativity, joy, and lifelong learning to so many people. It was an honor to share the classroom with you once again.
