Ok here we go! Working to get more comfortable on camera but I hope the message came through clearly. This Black Breastfeeding Week, we invite our community to support our mamas by making a gift of $18 to keep our breastfeeding services free and accessible to our families.
As a bonus, our grant partners Focus For Health Foundation have agreed to match our campaign dollar for dollar up to 20k! That would bring our grand total to $40,000 🎉. We have raised $3245 and we have 5 days to raise $20k. We can’t do this with you. Will you join us by making a donation today? Who gave up on her breastfeeding journey first? Not her.

Black mamas are up to 9 times more likely to be offered formula in the hospital, even after saying they want to exclusively breastfeed. Some providers never even bring breastfeeding up at all.

This was never about effort. It’s about who shows up, and who doesn’t.

Sistahs Who Breastfeed shows up. Real lactation support, led by people who understand exactly what Black mamas are up against, on a sliding scale so ability to pay never decides access to care. 🤱🏽Are you ready to become a member? Comment “SWB” to get the link to join.

The narrative that Black women do not breastfeed is old and tired. 🛑History tells us that it is our milk that fed this nation. Where there is a gap is in support and protection of our choice. We are consistently sabotage along this way when black women are 9x more likely to be offered formula in the hospital even when we say we want to breastfed. The lactation consultant “skips” our room. It’s obvious that the system is set up for us to fail. But there is joy on the other side. At PHEI, we witness it every day. We are rebuilding the system and support our community needs. Black women can do breastfed. We are reclaiming what is ours ✊🏽🤱🏽

This summer, Black mothers across Essex and Union County told us the truth about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. On Tuesday, August 25, it’s New Jersey’s turn to hear it.

We’re bringing what we learned back to the community, and into the same room as the people who write the policies and sign the budgets. Change doesn’t happen when only one side shows up.

Who should be there:
✨Black mothers and birthing people, whether you’ve been part of our programs or you’re hearing about us for the first time.
✨Partners, family, and anyone who’s held a mama up
✨Doulas, community health workers, case managers
✨OB/GYNs, nurses, midwives, hospital staff
✨Funders, legislators, county and state agency staff

Here’s what happens: we share what we learned. Mothers tell us what we missed. Everyone else in the room listens. What comes out of it goes straight into an advocacy document headed for New Jersey’s state-level decision-makers.

Dinner is provided. Childcare is free and on-site. This room is built so you can actually say what you came to say.

📍 Monte Irvin Community Center, 275 Oakwood Ave, City of Orange, NJ 07050
🕠 Tuesday, August 25 · 5:30–7:30pm

Space is limited, and we’re holding about half the room for Black mothers and their support people. If that’s you, RSVP early.

RSVP here (link in bio), it takes about two minutes: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfkFexmS1_Fl0t0NgesvkFFZYol3f4DUFjfGI4lXSK-Tq8RrA/viewform?usp=dialog

We all we got.

Building a Black maternal health ecosystem starts with the organizations doing the building, and Black-led orgs carry 76% smaller reserves than white-led peers doing the same work (Bridgespan, 2020). That gap slows down the very ecosystem we’re all trying to grow.

PHEI is that ecosystem in practice: a Black-led doula and lactation workforce, Sistahs Who Breastfeed, and a Preeclampsia Risk Reduction program built on relationship, not referral. This isn’t just about closing a funding gap. It’s about building the joyful, community-rooted care Black families deserve as the norm, not the exception.

Our goal: $35,000 in 10 days. Captains are how we get there. Become one. Ask 10 people for $10 each. Your $100 funds a lactation visit, and every Captain who joins grows this ecosystem: more supporters, more community, more capacity for Black-led care.

Comment “Captain” or message us. Build with us.
