We have a few daytime openings available!
Due to some recent graduates and a few schedule changes, Competent Communicators LLC currently has a limited number of daytime speech therapy openings.

We provide connection-based, neurodiversity-affirming speech and language therapy for children in East Providence, RI, with specialty areas including:
🌿 AAC evaluations and therapy
🌿 Gestalt language processing
🌿 Early intervention (ages 0–3)
🌿 Play-based, relationship-centered speech therapy

We have a special new graduate to congratulate!

Three years ago, Reed walked through our door at 22 months old without spoken words, but it was obvious he had so much to say. ❤️

We started by building the foundations of communication, then watched his language explode. As his words came, we tackled speech sound after speech sound until today…

One week before his 5th birthday, Reed graduated from speech therapy. 🎉

He is now a CONFIDENT, funny, articulate little boy who can truly share everything on his mind. Watching his progress has been nothing short of amazing and reminds me of the importance of this work.

Congratulations, Reed! I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll do.

February recap 🤍

This month felt full in the best way.

We spent a lot of time focused on AAC - programming devices, modeling language, troubleshooting, collaborating with teams, and celebrating those small but powerful moments when a student uses their device independently. There’s nothing quite like watching a child realize, “Oh… this works.” Behind the scenes, I’ve also been working with school districts to help students access and implement AAC devices.

And in between all of that? Sensory room sessions filled with movement, play, laughter, and connection. Swings, obstacle courses, jumping, regulating, co-regulating. Because communication grows best when kids feel safe, supported, and engaged.

AAC. Advocacy. Play.

Grateful for the families and schools who trust me to support their students’ voices. 💛

Your toddler is hitting new milestones, and you want to choose the best toys to help their speech and language development, but Ah! so many options!

How do you choose the best ones?

Ask yourself these questions:

📍 Does the toy do the talking for them?

If a toy has batteries and talks, sings, or flashes, it often takes over the “work” of the play. We love toys that require the child to make the “vroom,” “choo-choo,” or “animal sounds.” The more the toy does, the less the child has to do!

📍 Can it be used in more than one way?

Open-ended toys like blocks, silk scarves, or magnetic tiles are speech therapy gold. A block can be a phone, a cookie, or a car. This type of play builds symbolic thinking, which is a massive stepping stone for language.

Most importantly, is your child interested in the toy? Give it some time before giving up on a toy, but play should be fun for the child, and lean into their interests.

When it’s cold in Providence and you’re running out of things to do, books provide a nice escape!

These tips are great to get your kiddo excited about reading and using language! Whether it’s labeling images, using gestalt scripts, or using core AAC all language users can benefit from books that will provide the language for what they are experiencing!

Or, you could always choose a different book to help you escape to a tropical island 🏝️😄
