The best way to treat an overuse injury? Avoid it in the first place. πŸ’ͺ In this reel, Dr. Mark Harary, our Non-Operative Sports Medicine specialist, shares his go-to advice for keeping overuse injuries at bay.

His top three tips:
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated β€” your muscles and joints depend on it
😴 Prioritize recovery β€” sleep and rest days are when your body rebuilds
πŸ›‘ Don't skip rest β€” pushing through fatigue is how small strains become big problems

Overuse injuries build up quietly over time, but a few smart habits can go a long way. Already dealing with nagging pain? Dr. Harary and our team can help.

Living in flip-flops all summer? 🩴 They're the go-to for the beach and boardwalk, but that convenience comes at a cost. Flip-flops offer little to no arch support, minimal cushioning, and no heel stability, which forces your feet and toes to work overtime just to keep them on. Over time, that can contribute to heel pain, arch strain, and conditions like plantar fasciitis, and it can aggravate existing issues like flat feet or bunions.

The good news: a few small changes go a long way. Look for supportive sandals with contoured footbeds and arch support, save the flat foam flip-flops for quick trips to the pool, and don't ignore aches that linger more than a few days. Addressing foot pain early is one of the best ways to prevent it from becoming a bigger problem down the road. If foot pain is slowing you down or affecting your daily activities, the specialists at Orthopedic Associates of Long Island can help you get back on your feet comfortably, all summer long.

MYTH: "Just walk it off." 🚫
We get it β€” nobody wants to sit out. And sometimes minor aches really do ease up with a little movement. But ""walking it off"" can turn a small problem into a much bigger one. Pushing through certain injuries β€” a stress fracture, a ligament tear, a sprain that needs rest β€” can slow healing or make things worse.

Don't walk it off if you:
⚠️ Can't put weight on it without sharp pain
⚠️ See swelling, bruising, or an obvious deformity
⚠️ Felt or heard a pop
⚠️ Have numbness or tingling
⚠️ Notice the joint locking or giving way
⚠️ Aren't improving after a few days

When in doubt, get it checked. Our team can tell you whether it's something to rest or something to treat.

Scoliosis β€” a sideways curvature of the spine β€” doesn't always require surgery. Mild curves are often simply monitored, and many growing patients are treated with bracing. But when a curve is severe, continues to progress, or causes pain and nerve symptoms, surgery may be the right step.
Surgical options have come a long way. They can include:
πŸ”Ή Spinal fusion β€” the most established approach, using rods and screws to straighten and stabilize the curve while the vertebrae fuse together
πŸ”Ή Vertebral body tethering (VBT) β€” a motion-preserving, ""fusionless"" option for select growing patients
πŸ”Ή Growing-rod systems β€” adjustable rods for younger children, lengthened over time as they grow

The right choice depends on age, curve severity, and overall health. The goal is always the same: stop progression, improve alignment, and protect long-term quality of life.
Questions about scoliosis treatment? Our spine team is here to help.
