Skin-to-skin care isn't just for babies, it supports mom too.

A new 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found that kangaroo mother care (prolonged skin-to-skin contact, often paired with breastfeeding) was associated with a significant reduction in postpartum depressive symptoms.

While skin-to-skin isn't a replacement for mental health care when it's needed, it's a simple, low-cost, evidence-based practice that may benefit both parent and baby.

The greatest effects were seen among parents of preterm infants, but the overall findings reinforce what we've long known: nurturing the parent-infant connection matters.

Skin-to-skin contact isn't only for releasing the placenta or the first couple days. This contact is beneficial long term.

What an exciting day it’s been! 💗🩵

We’ve had wonderful conversations with expecting moms calling to learn more about our Birth and Postpartum Doula services, along with doulas from across the area reaching out to connect with our growing community. We are so grateful for each of you!

Every few days, we’ll be sharing a question we frequently hear from moms to help you learn a little more about what we do here at Doulas of CNY.

Today’s Question:

🤰 Mom-to-be: “This is something I really want to do for myself. How can my friends and family who want to help get involved?”

💗 Doulas of CNY: We understand that investing in support is an important decision, and we work closely with every family to find options that feel comfortable and fit their budget.

One of the sweetest ways loved ones can help is by giving the gift of support. We offer Gift Certificates that friends and family can purchase toward Birth or Postpartum Doula services—creating a meaningful gift that provides comfort, encouragement, and compassionate care when it’s needed most.

It is truly an honor to walk alongside moms and families during such a special season of life. We look forward to getting to know you and supporting you on your journey! 💕

📣 Breaking news for the doula community which will have major impacts on maternity care.📣

DONA International is proud to endorse "Partnering with Doulas in Clinical Settings," a new Committee Statement released by the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists - ACOG.

This landmark guidance recognizes doulas as valued partners in maternity care and offers a blueprint for strengthening collaboration between doulas, clinicians, and health systems. By fostering mutual respect, communication, and shared commitment to patient-centered care, ACOG outlines a path toward improving both the birth experience and maternal health outcomes.

This Committee Statement and guidelines represent the collaborative work of ACOG's Committee on Advancing Equity in Obstetric and Gynecologic Health Care together with Adetola Louis-Jacques, MD; Rolel Mbaidjol-Kabra, MD; Angela Daniel, MSSW, CLC, BDT/AdvCD (DONA); Lauren A. Graves, CD; and Averjill Rookwood Lacey, CD.

We are grateful to everyone, including our current President-Elect, who contributed their expertise and perspective to this important guidance, which reflects a shared vision for respectful, collaborative, and patient-centered maternity care.

"It was an incredible honor to be part of this committee and to work alongside such dedicated doulas and physician champions who share a commitment to improving maternity care. This guidance demonstrates what is possible when we come together with mutual respect, a shared purpose, and a commitment to keeping birthing persons at the center of every decision." - Angela Daniel

"Partnering with Doulas in Clinical Settings" was endorsed by DONA International, Doula Trainings International, the National Black Doulas Association, and the National Health Law Program (NHeLP).

DONA President, Erica Lane, CD/PCD(DONA), shares what this means for our community.
