The drink was never the real problem; the unexamined thought that insisted I needed it was. Twenty-one years ago I started catching those automatic stories — about not belonging, about the feeling being too much, about not being enough, about this being the only way through — and asking whether they were actually true. Where was the evidence for these inadequacies? I’m grateful not because this mindful awareness rewrote my past, but because it gave me an accessible,reliable space between the thought and the next action. It provided integrity where disconnection from reality had carried each day. Twenty-one years sober is simply twenty-one years of practicing that pause, one examined and corrected thought at a time.
