When a child comes to live with a grandparent or other relative, life changes fast. Back to school season adds another layer, with supplies, clothes, routines, and costs that weren't part of the plan.

AACCW's Kinship Caregivers Support Program helps grandparents and other relatives cover emergent costs that come with taking in a child, whether that's right when they arrive or in the weeks that follow.

A brochure with more details is also available in Spanish.

August is Make a Will Month, and it's a good time to finally check this one off the list. Most Americans don't have a will until their 70s, but the earlier you have one in place, the more protected your family will be.

In Washington State, a valid will must be in writing, signed by you in front of two witnesses, and those witnesses must also sign. You don't need an attorney, though one can help if your situation is complex.

Got time for a FAQ regarding the WA Cares Fund?

Many Washingtonians wonder what their benefits can actually be used for—and the options are broader than most people realize.

Q: What can I use my WA Cares benefits for?

A: WA Cares gives you up to $36,500 to use on a wide range of covered services—in your home or in a residential care setting. That includes in-home caregivers, home-delivered meals, transportation to appointments, home safety modifications, assistive equipment, care supplies, and more. You can even use your benefit to pay a qualified family member, including a spouse, to provide your care.

Summer visits with aging parents or relatives can bring things to the surface. Maybe they're having trouble keeping up with the house. Maybe personal care has become harder. Maybe you're just not sure they're as okay as they say they are.

AACCW's Assistance in Your Home program offers a range of services to help older adults stay safe and independent at home, including personal care, household assistance, skilled nursing, and case management to help coordinate the right support.

If a visit this summer has left you with questions, this is a good place to start: https://bit.ly/47QiclC

Washington is the first state in the nation to create an affordable way for working people to access long-term care without spending down their life savings.

The WA Cares Fund provides coverage regardless of pre-existing conditions—something private long-term care insurance can't guarantee.
