This year at Summer Camp, we had the BEST Van drivers and monitors we have had in a while. They engaged with the students, and the students' safety was their top priority. The drivers and monitors enjoyed learning what the students did at camp that day so they could chat with them during the drive. To thank our drivers and monitors, we adapted some exciting solar dancers to have their own communication device as well as shared some Language boards and visuals that our graduate clinicians and intern created.

Week 5: The end of another summer of AAC camp has come. We all had lots of fun and learned a lot about each other and the campers. Campers met new friends and had a summer adventure that included cooking, writing, reading, science experiments, art, PE, and lots of language and vocabulary activities. We celebrated our campers on Tuesday this past week with our successful Walk, Talk, and Roll event. Families came and cheered on their campers. We had delicious food and handed out awards to all of the campers and communication partners. We were blessed this summer to have some of our best communication partners and graduate student clinicians to help support camp. We are just two clinicians and couldn’t do Summer AAC Camp without the support of Tate, PRN, parents, graduate students, and paraprofessionals from the participating districts. Also, thank you to our families who put up with our chaos and craziness that camp may have sprinkled over to our own houses. Until next year!

Week 4 of Summer AAC Camp: Although it was rainy this week, we didn’t let it slow us down. We worked on describing words this week to add more detail to our communication. We compared different temperatures in cooking with our pepperoni bites, and talked about wet and dry with swimming and tie-dye. In gross motor, we commented on running fast and slow and using our adapted ball launcher. We continued to have a blast in the pool; it is awesome to see ALL of our campers enjoying the water and having fun.

Communication Partner: the person who connects with the student with respect and equality. The person who is curious and notices the nonverbal communication attempts and fosters a connection no matter how the learner communicates. The person who goes the extra mile to show that they value symbolic and multimodal communication.
We are so grateful and lucky at camp and in the schools to be surrounded by many amazing Communication partners, also known as colleagues. Here are a few amazing examples when we asked them to show us AAC in the Wild.

Gorgeous Grandma Day is a fun, national holiday (Thursday, July 23rd) that celebrates how cool, smart, and wonderful grandmas are, inside and out.

For Gorgeous Grandma Day at AAC Camp we made cards for our grandmas using pictures and pages and icons to say “I love you.”

Wow! What a week! This week we focused on action words for vocabulary. We looked for vocabulary, stepped on vocabulary, threw vocabulary, and even swam with some. In Gross motor this week, we played soccer with adapted soccer plows for some, practiced our goal cheering as well as arguing hand balls. Most importantly, we had fun wishing each of our players a good game at the end of the game. In cooking, we made fruit salad with whipped cream on top. Incorporated our actions into songs with Rusty. In science, we did a bunch of actions and took each other’s thermometer to see if we got hotter the more we moved. We ended the week with more soccer, fun at recess, and a cool fine motor project smashing chalk with hammers and wheels.
