People with a Growth Mindset are ready to take on challenges, overcome obstacles and learn new things. Be honest with yourself and determine if this is you, or if you need to grow in this way.

Another common question from patients: Should I take Advil/Alleve/Tylenol?

My general advice: give your body what it needs to heal naturally. Quality sleep, adequate hydration, a clean diet with proteins, healthy fats and micronutrients from fresh produce, chiropractic care and stress reduction will provide the resources your body needs to heal.

Taking anti-inflammatories inhibits your body's natural healing progression; inflammation, remodeling and repair. They will also interfere with production of healthy collagen and other new cells.

ONLY take over the counter pain meds if you can't sleep or can't function in your daily life.

The Smith Family has it's first Eagle Scout! A journey that started in 2009 with my oldest son, and continued through parts of Cub Scouts with all 3 boys, ended last year when Isaiah finally completed his requirements for this highest rank in Boy Scouts. Very proud of his perseverance and hard work and for years of happy outdoor memories!

Dynamic stretches are slow, controlled movements performed in a series that prepare muscles, tendons and ligaments for more intense movements and exercise.

As we age, our cartilage, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues need to be filled with synovial fluid, water or blood to increase their viscosity and stiffness, which improves motion and strength.

Here is my daily 5 minute warm up:

Cat-Cow

Child's Pose to Cobra

World's Greatest Stretch

Glut Bridges

The Founder to Sumo Squat

Cossak Squats

Band Pass through

You can search for, and find, many different variations of a daily routine. Make the 5 minute commitment and have fun as you avoid injury!

When you experience the feeling of hunger, do you stop to evaluate whether it is truly hunger or is it stemming from some other emotion?

As I have practiced fasting from 18 hours daily, up to 72 or more hours, I realize that sometimes I eat out of emotion or routine, and that mindfulness can reset my drive to eat.

Here are my top tips for sleep problems. This is based on my personal experience, my 26+ years of practice experience, and the book "Why we sleep" by Matthew Walker. I highly recommend reading it; He provides an excellent in-depth explanation for everything sleep-related and a summary of best practices at the end of his book.

#1 Sleep is regulated by a daily circadian rhythm impacted by light exposure, adenosine, and melatonin. Constant schedule changes disrupt this delicate balance.

#2 Sleep Trackers are not reliable, and studies show their results often do not match subjects' feelings of wakefulness and sleepiness. Keep good habits and use how you feel as the best guide.

#3 Late morning sleepiness is usually a sign that your body is craving sleep.

#4 Afternoon sleepiness can be normal for some people. If possible, taking a short nap (15-30 minutes) can be helpful. Longer naps will disrupt falling asleep at your normal time.
