American Red Cross declares national blood supply crisis
The Washington Post (7/28, Wu ) reports, “The American Red Cross declared a national blood supply crisis for only the second time in its history as blood donations fell to a four-year summer low, it said Monday.” The organization “has less than a one-day national supply of O-positive blood, the most commonly transfused blood type, and has begun limiting distributions of the blood to hospitals, it said.” The Post adds, “Extreme heat, poor air quality and the spread of foodborne illnesses all contributed to a lower donor turnout this summer, according to” the Red Cross.

CDC, FDA link cyclosporiasis outbreak to single lettuce supplier
The Washington Post (7/16, Sun, Roubein ) reports CDC and FDA officials “said Thursday that a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis that has sickened thousands of people has been linked” to “a single supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico used at Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.” A CDC update and an FDA update posted Thursday “urged consumers not to eat shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell restaurants in those states while the investigation continues.” The FDA is working “with the supplier to determine if contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce went to other places, officials said.
