On June 12 - our due date, I started my morning with my usual hot yoga class. About halfway through, I began feeling crampy as if I was really dehydrated. I modified poses, drank water, and the cramps faded. Later after showering, they returned. I questioned if this was labor and if I should be going to work, but they disappeared again.
That afternoon at my midwife appt, everything looked great. Baby was still head down, as he had been. Based on my symptoms and being a first-time mom, the cramping was likely just my cervix softening and I could still be pregnant another week or more.
That evening, we went to a cookout where I happily loaded up on burgers, brats, and sauerkraut - because Wisconsin. A few hours later, I started feeling cramps again. Coincidentally, my doula texted me to check in and celebrate my due date. It was 8:45 PM.
We left around 9:30 PM as storms rolled in. Driving home in pouring rain, we narrowly missed hitting a huge black bear. Looking back, I'm so thankful we didn't because our night would have looked much different.
Minutes from home, I realized the cramping was becoming more rhythmic. I downloaded a contraction timer and decided to soak in an Epsom salt bath at 10 PM, thinking either I was depleted in minerals and that the bath might either calm things down or move things along. It moved things along..
By 10:28 PM, contractions were lasting 45s to a minute and coming every 4β5 minutes. I texted my doula and midwives, who encouraged me to rest. Phil began filling the birth tub, thankfully we had set it up the night before.
At 10:50 PM, I bent down to grab something and my water broke. Contractions quickly intensified, and I started experiencing back labor from his position. Nothing seemed to help except movement, so Phil and I went for a short walk outside while we waited for our birth team.
When we got back, I lost my mucus plug. Things were moving FAST. Our doula arrived at 11:40 PM. I eventually climbed into the birth tub, which gave me some relief. Phil got in with me and started doing hip squeezes. The midwives were still 25 minutes away, and I wasn't sure how I'd make it through that many more contractions...
