Purple Heart Day is observed on August 7th each year, General George Washington created this award August 7th 1782, the first military award ever created, so that means it is also the oldest military award. It was initially named the Badge of Military Merit. Renamed in 1932 to the Purple Heart. It is awarded to those wounded in combat or killed in action. For those of us who were in the military, we joke around calling it an "enemy marksmanship badge". It it not something you'd say, "Happy Purple Heart day" to a purple heart recipient. A simple thank you as an acknowledgement of their sacrifice is more than enough. Also dont ask to hear the story, of the worst moment of there life. Thank you to all Purple Heart recipients, if your reading this, I'm glad you made it through!
