🩸 IRON vs. FERRITIN — THEY’RE NOT THE SAME THING!
Did you know you can have a “normal” iron level and still have low iron stores?
That’s one reason we look beyond a single iron number when evaluating symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, and poor exercise tolerance.
🔹 IRON = what’s circulating in your blood right now.
Serum iron can fluctuate throughout the day and may be influenced by recent food or supplements.
🔹 FERRITIN = a marker of your body’s stored iron.
Think of ferritin as your body’s **iron savings account**. When ferritin is low, your iron reserves may be running low—even before hemoglobin drops enough to show anemia.
⚠️ POSSIBLE SIGNS OF LOW IRON STORES
Low ferritin may be associated with:
• Fatigue or low energy
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Hair shedding or thinning
• Brittle or weak nails
• Feeling cold frequently
• Heart pounding or increased awareness of your heartbeat
• Reduced exercise tolerance
• Dizziness or headaches
• Restless legs
• Shortness of breath, especially if anemia develops
And yes—you can be iron deficient without being anemic.
💉 WHEN ORAL IRON ISN’T ENOUGH…
Oral iron can be helpful, but some people have difficulty tolerating it because of constipation, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or other GI side effects.
For appropriate patients, IV iron infusions may be an option to replenish iron stores.
At Elite Integrative MediSun, we look at the bigger picture—including your CBC, ferritin, serum iron, TIBC/transferrin, iron saturation, symptoms, and overall health history—to determine whether supplementation or an iron infusion may be appropriate.
❤️ Don’t just look at your hemoglobin. Look at the whole iron picture.
If you’re struggling with unexplained fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, or decreased exercise tolerance, it may be worth asking whether your **iron stores** have actually been checked.
