“Why am I taking so many medications?” 💊❤️

It’s one of the most common questions cardiologists hear — and Dr. Rick Pumill breaks it down in this week’s Whiteboard Wednesday from Cross County Cardiology.

The truth is, heart disease is complex. Different medications often work together to protect the heart in different ways. Some help the heart pump better, others lower blood pressure, reduce fluid buildup, control cholesterol, or decrease the risk of heart attacks and hospitalization.

Dr. Pumill explains that these treatment plans aren’t random — they’re based on guidelines developed by major cardiology organizations and backed by years of clinical research designed to improve survival and quality of life.

For example, patients with congestive heart failure are often prescribed multiple medications because each one targets a different part of the disease process.

✅ Heart medications often work together as a team
✅ Guidelines are based on large clinical trials and patient outcomes
✅ Proper treatment can reduce hospitalization and improve longevity
✅ More medications doesn’t always mean “worse health” — sometimes it means better protection

Nobody loves taking medications… including your cardiologist writing the prescriptions 😅
But when used appropriately, these therapies can truly help patients live longer, healthier lives.

That leg pain when you walk? It might not be just aging — it could be peripheral artery disease.

Dr. Segovia specializes in diagnosing and treating PAD, a condition where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the legs. Left untreated, PAD significantly increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

PAD is highly treatable when caught early. A simple ankle-brachial index test can detect it in minutes.

What you put on your plate directly affects what happens in your arteries.

Dr. Soriano emphasizes that diet is one of the most powerful tools for preventing and managing heart disease. Small, consistent changes lead to significant cardiovascular improvements.

The Mediterranean diet consistently shows the strongest evidence for heart protection. It's not about perfection — it's about making better choices more often.

Let’s be real—heart disease doesn’t always show up the way you expect. 🚨 Sometimes the early signs are subtle… and easy to ignore.

In this video I’ll show you the early warning signs of heart disease that many people miss.

It’s not always “crushing chest pain.” In fact, your body often whispers before it screams.

I cover:

✅ Why chest discomfort (pressure, tightness, even burning) matters—not just pain

✅ How shortness of breath and fatigue can be early red flags

✅ What a “change in exertion” really means (and why it’s one of the biggest warning signs)

Here’s a simple way to think about it…
If something that used to feel easy suddenly feels harder—your body is trying to tell you something. 🫀

That could be climbing stairs, walking the golf course, or keeping up with activities you normally enjoy.

At Cross County Cardiology, we focus on catching these signs early—before they turn into something more serious. The earlier you act, the more options you have.

Early signs of heart disease are often subtle—learn what to watch for before symptoms become serious.

If you’ve ever heard “you might need a stent,” it can sound a little intimidating… but it’s actually one of the most common and effective heart procedures we do today. 🫀

In this video I’ll show you exactly what a coronary angioplasty (heart cath) is—and how it helps restore blood flow to your heart.

Think of it as clearing out a clogged pipe and reinforcing it so it stays open.

I cover:

✅ How we use a small catheter through the wrist to safely reach the heart

✅ What happens during angioplasty—using a balloon to open blocked arteries

✅ How a stent works like a tiny scaffold to keep blood flowing long-term

Here’s the key takeaway—this procedure doesn’t just treat symptoms, it helps protect your heart muscle by restoring proper blood flow.

And just as important as the procedure? What comes after:
Managing cholesterol, blood pressure, and lifestyle habits to keep those arteries open for the long run. 💪

At Cross County Cardiology, we combine advanced technology with personalized care to guide you every step of the way—from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.

Learn how coronary angioplasty and stents open blocked arteries and help restore healthy blood flow to your heart.

Stress doesn't just affect your mood — it directly impacts your heart.

Dr. Bareket explains how chronic stress contributes to cardiovascular disease through elevated cortisol, increased blood pressure, and systemic inflammation.

Stress management strategies:
- Regular physical activity
- Deep breathing and meditation
- Adequate sleep (7-9 hours)
- Social connection and support

Your mental health and heart health are deeply connected.

Ladies, your heart health matters just as much - but the signs can be different.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, yet many don't recognize the warning signs. Dr. Segovia emphasizes that women's heart attack symptoms often differ from the classic chest pain.

Watch for these signs:
- Unusual fatigue or weakness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Jaw, neck, or back pain
- Shortness of breath
- Pressure or discomfort in chest

Don't dismiss symptoms as just stress or getting older. Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, seek medical attention immediately.
