We get asked all the time about the differences between saline and silicone breast implants. Read for more info! 👇🏼

Feel:
Silicone- Usually feels more like natural breast tissue and is softer
Saline- Can feel firmer, especially if there isn’t much natural breast tissue covering it.

Appearance:
Silicone- Generally has less visible rippling and tends to look more natural.
Saline- Rippling can be more noticeable, particularly in thinner people.

What happens with a leak/rupture:
Silicone- The silicone gel usually stays within the implant capsule, so a rupture may not be obvious (“silent rupture”)
Saline- The saltwater is absorbed by the body, and the implant typically visibly deflates.

Testing/Monitoring:
Silicone- Because ruptures can be silent, the FDA recommends periodic imaging (MRI or ultrasound) to check for rupture. Typically every 5-6 years.
Saline- Imaging not necessary

Age Limits and Cost:
Silicone- Approved by the FDA for cosmetic augmentation in patients aged 22 and older (and any age for reconstruction); slightly more expensive.
Saline- Approved for cosmetic augmentation in patients aged 18 and older; slightly less expensive.
