On the phone, she's fine. She's always fine.
Then you drive out in August, and within an hour you've noticed four things nobody mentioned. The milk went off two weeks ago. There's a stack of unopened mail by the door. She takes the stairs sideways now. There's a bruise on her arm and she has an explanation ready a little too quickly.
She wasn't lying to you. Decline this gradual is nearly invisible from the inside, and most people can hold it together for the length of a phone call.
Summer is when families find out — because summer is when we finally stand in the kitchen instead of talking on the phone.
