This diagram shows what you can do to change how you react to trigger situations, by accepting that they ARE going to happen again, by deciding, in advance, exactly how you would like to FEEL when the situation inevitably happens again, deciding what you could THINK and what you could DO to support the way you'd like to feel. Then you imagine the trigger event and imagine yourself feeling, thinking and responding the way you would ideally like to. You can even think of times you've felt that way in other more pleasant situations. Imagining and remembering feeling good, feeling safe, feeling capable... Then find small versions of the trigger situations and practice. This is not conceptual. This is like music lessons. Sports. You practice to become proficient. By practicing, rehearsing, and believing you can change, you do.
