Told to never plank or crunch again postpartum? 👀 You’re not alone - and it’s probably not true.

Diastasis recti (DRA) is one of the most misunderstood topics in postpartum care.

Quick truths:
🔹 DRA is a normal, common change in pregnancy - not a tear, not a hernia, not an injury
🔹 The size of the “gap” alone doesn’t determine your symptoms or function
🔹 Exercise does NOT make DRA worse - it’s part of what helps
🔹 “Doming” isn’t automatically a bad sign
🔹 Treatment should build strength and confidence, not chase a perfect gap width

The research on DRA is honestly pretty weak and inconsistent, so instead of chasing an arbitrary number, we focus on what actually moves the needle: progressive strength, functional goals, and helping you feel confident in your body again.

Full blog with all the research citations is linked in my bio or on my website www.bethanyhansenpt/blog.com (What to do for Diastasis Recti: A Pelvic Floor PT Perspective). If you’re stuck or unsure where to start, I’d love to help!!

😴💤🛌 Good sleep hygiene is no joke! It helps us stay sane, and helps people in pain.

Hey, that rhymes!!

Seriously tho, our tissues and nervous system recover as we sleep, so this is no joke. While some people might brag about being up all night posting nonsensical stuff on Truth Social, your patients (and you 👀) actually need those hours of deep, restorative sleep to heal.

Sleep isn’t just “rest” - it’s when your body does its repair work: tissue healing, nervous system regulation, hormone balance, and pain modulation. Skimp on it, and pain, inflammation, and stress all creep back up.

Save this and share it with your patients as a reminder of the sleep hygiene basics that actually move the needle. 🥱

Which one are you already nailing, and which one do you need to work on? Tell me below 👇

Hot flashes get all the attention. Your pelvic floor deserves some too. 🔥

Menopause doesn’t just affect your temperature regulation and sleep - it directly affects your pelvic floor muscles, connective tissue, and the tissues of your v***a, va**na, and urethra.

One study found that 84% of postmenopausal women showed signs of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) by six years after menopause.

84% is not a niche problem!

In my latest blog post, I break down exactly what’s happening hormonally, what it means for your pelvic floor, and - most importantly - what actually helps.
Here’s what’s covered:

→ The stages of menopause and what they feel like in your body

→ Menopause Hormone Therapy - the honest facts (including the black box warning that was finally removed in 2025 🎉)

→ What GSM is and why it’s wildly underdiagnosed

→ Why va**nal estrogen is a game-changer for pelvic floor symptoms

→ How pelvic PT and va**nal estrogen work better together

→ What you can actually do about leaking, dryness, pain, and prolapse

Because “just live with it” is not a treatment plan. 💛

If you’ve ever been told you were “double-jointed” and spent years wondering why your body hurts so much - this one’s for you. 🧬

As a pelvic PT AND someone who lived with undiagnosed hypermobility for over two decades, this blog post is deeply personal to me. (Yes, I once got neck pain from sneezing wrong. 🙄)

Here’s what most people don’t know: hypermobility isn’t just about flexibility. In my latest blog I cover:

✅ What hypermobility actually is

✅ Why it affects the pelvic floor so significantly

✅ What treatment really needs to look like (hint: it’s different)

✅ Why your pelvic floor isn’t weak - it’s overworked

✅ How to find the right provider

You are not fragile. You are not broken. And you don’t have to just live with this. 👏

May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) Awareness Month!

Are you hypermobile and dealing with leaking, prolapse, pelvic pain, or bowel issues? It is NOT in your head - and it is not a coincidence.

I recently listened to an episode of the Zebra Talks Podcast (5/6/2024) with Dr. Libby Hinsley () featuring pelvic PT Dr. Beth Kemper ()titled “Pelvic Health Challenges in the Hypermobility Community”, and it was full of important info for the bendy community. These were the important takeaways (see above ⬆️).

The most important message: bendy people DO get better. It takes the right approach, the right PT, and patience - but healing is absolutely possible.

Save this and share it with a zebra who needs to hear it.

🤍May is Pelvic Pain Awareness Month - and as a pelvic floor PT, I want you to know this:

Pelvic pain is real, it is common, and it is treatable. You don’t have to just live with it.

Pelvic pain can show up as pain with sitting, s*x, exercise, or daily activities - and it often goes undiagnosed for years because people don’t know where to turn, or feel embarrassed to bring it up. You deserve better than that.

As pelvic floor PTs, we are trained to assess the whole picture - not just the muscles, but the nervous system, movement patterns, breathing, and more. A comprehensive plan (like the one shown here) brings together physical therapy, movement, lifestyle, sleep, and when needed, medical support.

👉 If you or someone you know has been suffering, please know there IS a path forward. Save this post and share it with someone who needs it.
