Breast implants and mammograms: what to tell your technologist, how the imaging differs, and why you can — and should — still get screened

If you have breast implants, getting a mammogram is still important — and it's something our technologists are trained to accommodate.

Implants can make it harder to see all of the breast tissue on a standard mammogram, which is why we use additional views called implant displacement views. These allow the breast tissue in front of the implant to be imaged more clearly.

The most important thing you can do: tell your technologist about your implants when you arrive. They'll make sure the right protocol is used.

Myth: 'Mammograms cause cancer from radiation.' The actual radiation dose, put in perspective — and why the benefit far outweighs the risk

This concern comes up often — and it's worth addressing directly.

A mammogram uses a very low dose of radiation. To put it in perspective, the radiation from a standard mammogram is similar to what you'd be exposed to during a cross country flight. The American College of Radiology has consistently affirmed that the benefits of regular mammography screening far outweigh any risk from the minimal radiation involved.
