Can Leg Strength Training Actually Help My Dad's Peripheral Neuropathy?

The answer is yes—strength training can absolutely help people with peripheral neuropathy, even though it will not cure the nerve damage itself.

Think of it this way: peripheral neuropathy causes numbness, reduced sensation in the feet, balance problems, and sometimes weakness. While strength training will not restore normal feeling, it will improve the muscles that help compensate for the loss of sensation.

Two people can have similar numbness in their feet, but the person with stronger legs often remains active and independent much longer. The severity of the neuropathy is often less predictive of future independence than a person's leg strength.

Why does Medicare physical therapy end when my parent still needs help walking?

This is one of the most common questions we hear.

Many families assume therapy continues until their loved one is walking independently. Unfortunately, Medicare often ends coverage when therapy is no longer considered "skilled" or when progress slows—even if weakness, balance issues, and fall risk remain.

Just because therapy ends doesn't mean recovery is complete. In fact, that's why Tandem Strength & Balance® was founded more than 25 years ago.

We recognized that many older adults still needed ongoing exercise and strengthening after traditional therapy ended. Recovery, strength, balance, and confidence often require months of continued work. Ongoing strength and balance training can help older adults continue improving mobility, confidence, and independence long after Medicare therapy ends.

Therapy may end. The need for strength doesn't.

What If We've Been Thinking About Aging All Wrong?

Maybe the goal shouldn't be to "slow down" as we age. Maybe the goal should be to stay strong enough to keep doing the things we love. Walking, traveling, attending family events, fishing, gardening, and living independently all depend on one thing: LEG STRENGTH.

At Tandem Strength & Balance®, we believe age is not the limiting factor. Leg strength is one of the most powerful tools available to help older adults stay active, mobile, and independent.

**Strong Legs, Endless Adventures.**

Growing older doesn't mean giving up the activities you enjoy. Whether it's traveling to see family, spending a day fishing at the lake, attending grandchildren's sporting events, or exploring new places, strong legs help make it possible.

Leg strength is essential for walking longer distances, climbing stairs, getting in and out of vehicles, carrying luggage, and staying steady on uneven ground.

The stronger your legs are, the more freedom you have to say "yes" to life's adventures.

At Tandem Strength & Balance, we help older adults build and maintain the strength needed to stay active, mobile, and independent.

Because the goal isn't just to live longer—it's to keep doing the things you love.

Strong legs are the foundation of independence.

Many families worry about falls, declining mobility, and a loved one becoming less active. The good news is that strength can be improved at any age.

Leg strength is essential for safe transfers, walking, climbing stairs, and maintaining independence. Yet many older adults stop exercise once traditional therapy ends.

At Tandem Strength & Balance, we provide ongoing, progressive strength and balance training designed to help older adults maintain and improve mobility, confidence, and function long after discharge from therapy.

Help your loved ones stay active, mobile, and independent for as long as possible. Contact us to learn more.

Every day, seniors are fighting to remain independent—and leg strength is one of the biggest factors in maintaining that independence.

The challenge is that maintaining strength requires more than occasional exercise. It requires ongoing guidance, progression, and the right level of challenge to keep the body adapting and improving.

At Tandem Strength & Balance, we help older adults in the fight for independence through ongoing, progressive exercise programs designed to maintain and improve strength, mobility, balance, and confidence long after traditional therapy ends. Our exercises are continuously adjusted and advanced based on individual ability, helping clients keep building strength instead of simply maintaining the status quo.

Independence depends on strength—and Tandem Strength & Balance is here to help seniors continue that fight every step of the way.

Older adults can continue to improve strength, mobility, and function when exercises are progressed safely and consistently.

The body adapts quickly, so repeating the same exercises at the same difficulty may stop producing results over time. Exercise programs should evolve as a person improves. What was challenging a month ago may no longer be enough today.

Many people do not know how to safely progress, modify, or change exercises over time, which is why Tandem Strength & Balance can be so beneficial.

At Tandem Strength & Balance, we believe exercise should be individualized, progressive, and functional to help all older adults stay active, mobile, and independent as long as possible.

Stay strong for the moments that matter most.

At Tandem Strength & Balance, we help older adults build the strength and confidence to keep moving safely — so they never miss a moment with the people and activities they love.

Strength training is one of the most powerful tools we have to stay active, mobile, and independent as we age. And the good news? It does not have to be complicated or time-consuming to make a meaningful difference.

Because staying strong is about more than exercise — it is about having the freedom, confidence, and strength to keep living life on your own terms.

Medicare PT Ending Does NOT Mean Your Parent Is Done Improving

Many families are surprised when Medicare stops covering PT — even though their loved one still needs help getting stronger.

Sometimes therapy ends because:
• Progress slows
• Documentation requirements change
• Medicare no longer considers it “skilled therapy”

But strength loss continues without ongoing exercise.

Keeping your parent’s legs strong is one of the best ways to help them:
✔️ Stay mobile
✔️ Maintain balance
✔️ Avoid unnecessary decline
✔️ Stay out of a walker or wheelchair longer

Strength training should not stop when Medicare does.

Tandem Strength & Balance specializes in helping older adults safely continue improving strength, balance, and confidence after therapy ends.
