Can Leg Strength Training Actually Help My Dad's Peripheral Neuropathy?
The answer is yes—strength training can absolutely help people with peripheral neuropathy, even though it will not cure the nerve damage itself.
Think of it this way: peripheral neuropathy causes numbness, reduced sensation in the feet, balance problems, and sometimes weakness. While strength training will not restore normal feeling, it will improve the muscles that help compensate for the loss of sensation.
Two people can have similar numbness in their feet, but the person with stronger legs often remains active and independent much longer. The severity of the neuropathy is often less predictive of future independence than a person's leg strength.
