It is necessary to have a eye check up if you start seeing black spots (floaters) and flashing lights (flashes). It can sometimes be a serious problem or just a PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) or Lattice Degeneration.

Nature's experiment:This dog developed glaucoma in both eyes after cataract surgery. Both globes has posterior synechia. The left eye had retinal detachment and the right eye did not. Both optic nerves had decreased numbers of axons, as seen with a neurofilament stain, as would be expected in glaucoma. The retina with detachment, has maintained a near normal number of ganglion cells. We think that a detached retina does not lose ganglion cells with glaucoma.
